Fantastic that he's found God in rock-star fashion after he's purloined the innocence of little boys. Goddammit, I can't even listen to "I Want You Back" anymore without keeling over from who he's wanting back.

Am I the only one who completely ignored the video-game revolution in favor of pinball machines and air-hockey?

But in "I Want You Back" he wanted boys his own age. The problem is he still wants them now.

Yes.

Why no love for Ms. Pac Man or Space Invaders in the video game round-up?

Tying threads together, my favorite Christmas gift when I was a kid was one year when there was a HUGE box under the tree addressed to the family cat from Santa. So, after all the presents were opened, my parents had us unwrap the cat's gift and there was our atari.

A close second was when my parents put in my phone line and had a wrapped box ringing on my desk. My first call was from my grandfather.

Damn. I remember playing these when I was 12. I spent the summer in Japan and would go to the American club during the day (what a way to experience Japanese culture, hunh?). I would spend my days lunching by the pool and playing galaga and phoenix in the mini-arcade. By the time I took my first ride on the shinkansen, I was an expert. 100% on the bonus rounds.

I'm sorry, pong sucked. Boring as hell. IMHO, Doom is where things got interesting.

Honestly, I just sucked at them. And I didn't like those little animated freaks chasing after me through the maze--like a computerized "The Shining." But nothing against 'em except they stole valuable arcade space from my pinball machines and air-hockey tables, at which I excelled.

I have recently discovered a vintage pinball dealership. I may have to ransack my handbag fund.

2. I didn't like "Defender" but the News Radio episode where Dave reveals his past history with the game (and its effect on his life) is hilarious.

3. Dissent. "Spy Hunter" was a great game. Plus, it had the theme to Peter Gunn. They're even coming out with a sequel.

4. Nobody mentioned "Gauntlet" with the "Death" character who would drain life from you until you died unless you had a potion; "Street Fighter 2" which was endlessly entertaining, especially when you were beating up your buddy; or "NBA Jams/NFL Blitz" which were great games.

5. Am I also the only one who notices that whenever they show someone on TV playing a videogame, they are almost always using the music/sound effects to the Atari 2600 version of Pac Man? Is that public domain stuff? Did Atari start copyrighting the sound effects after that?
Holy shit you're my alter ego. Ditto on that Newsradio episode, Spy Hunter and especially Gauntlet: "VALKERIE IS ABOUT TO DIE!"

I was always high scorer on the right kind. There were a few semesters in colege where Ms. Pac Man was the closest thing to a major that I had.

There were two kinds. one where she moves faster than the ghosts. All my patterns are for that kind. Occansionally I'll see a Ms. Pac Man, and try to revisit my glory days, but for the most part the slower versions are around.

When I do find the right kind, its real clear that being good at a pattern game requires constant practice. You don't hit 100K+ playing once a year.

I would always spend a $20 roll of quarters on Ikari Warriors:

And no one could beat the Tigers in RBI baseball:

I missed a few, too, like Gauntlet ("Elf needs food badly."), Battlezone and my favorite of the early laserdisc games (screw Dragon's Lair) -- Mach 3:
