Yay Pistons, Yay Hank

Congrats, Hank. In honor of this glorious occasion, I would like to offer a positive view of Our President, in a show of solidari . . . um, blind loyalt . . . um, because I like you.

I believe that Our President can bench press more than any previous sitting president. I admire his personal commitment to physical fitness.

Speaking of gerrymandering

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/2629683

Chris Bell, one of our local Representatives here in Houston, has filed a formal ethics complaint against Tom Delay. The complaint generally focuses on Delay's involvement with the redistricting mess last year. Bell's seat was lost due to the redistricting. I don't know what he did in Congress, but I liked him in our non-partisan City Council.

The radio this morning said that it was the first ethics complaint in seven years. One Republican was quoted as saying "you kill our dog, we'll kill your cat." Chris Bell said he was glad he didn't own any cats. Nice to see Democrats and Republicans working towards the same goals.

FWIW, Delay's PAC is under investigation by the DA in Austin for improper campaign contributions to Texas Republicans, and there was a sudden interest by foreign corporations how lines were drawn on the Texas map. Delay says he hasn't hired a lawyer yet on this ethics charge, but he has lawyers all over the place.

Since redistricting's done at a state level, I don't entirely buy your hypothesis. The GOP has more power in more states and therefore is able to have greater sway in teh redistricting in more states. But it's not like they can get 100% GOP simply by redistricting. You still need republican voters to have republican districts. I think to demonstrate your point, you'd need to show something like that in contested elections, democrats are elected by much greater margins than are republicans, which would suggest that repubs have successfully concentrated all of the democrats into a few districts while spreading the repubs. just right to ensure likely electoral success. good luck showing that.

No fire. It might make sense to have Kimmel routinely insult cities prior to a championship so they have a chip on their shoulder.

As it was ending, these statements from Rip/Chauncey/Ben come on the screen basically saying "We all did something great, now don't go fuck it up." Can you imagine all the planning that goes into something like a final game, buy hats/champaign okay, but take time away from practice to film a spot like that i wouldn't have thought of.

How can you (or anyone) possibly disagree with my Point A -- a simple statement of fact?

Why do you disagree that the increased proportions of safe seats, brought about by more sophisticated gerrymandering over time and culminating in the redistricting after the 2000 decennial census (or, actually in Texas after 2002) -- has strengthened the control of the party with the majority of the seats in Congress?

Christ, do I always lose you guys when I try to use shorthand as oppose to David Broder-speak?

You didn't lose me and I understood your post, which is basically true - but in my mind it doesn't support a 13 point lead for the DEMS. That is crazy talk.

Sackcloth on the head is NOT torture

Apparently the "panties on the head" minimize-the-prisoner-abuse talking points are working so well that W passed along the template to the Pope during his trip to the Vatican last week.

Quote:
Vatican says torture, burning at stake during Inquisition less widespread than thought

Torture, burning at the stake and other punishment for the faithful condemned as witches or heretics by church tribunals during the centuries-long Inquisition was not as widespread as commonly believed, the Vatican said Tuesday....

Borromeo, curator of the work, said, for example, that while there were some 125,000 trials of suspected heretics in Spain, research found that about 1 percent of the defendants were executed, far fewer than commonly believed. Many of the burnings at the stake which took place during the centuries of the Inquisition actually were carried out by non-church tribunals, experts told reporters.
