Sportscenter 1 for 10 jokewise

Recalling our earlier posts about forced humor on Sportscenter...

I saw the Sunday 9 pm show and watched Stu and John validate all of our points from earlier in the week (stale bits, overused catchphrases, etc.).

However, they did have one funny bit...

When going over the Redskins-Falcons highlights, they mentioned how "Patrick Ramsey passed to Lavernius Coles, his TEAMMATE." Then they kept it up with a couple more TEAMMATE comments throughout the highlights.

This was funny for two reasons:

(1) They commented on Lisa Guerrero's gaffe on MNF when she called Coles the "former teammate" of Ramsey.

(2) They implicitly criticized someone on ABC, ESPN's sister network (which is verbotten under Disney's synergy policy).

In competent sideline reporter news, Suzy Kolber was solid in the Sunday night game (and wore a retro, Mary Tyler Moore-style outfit).

"Affleck was believed to still be in Los Angeles, though some reports had him heading to Las Vegas for tonight's Shane Mosely-Oscar De La Hoya fight."

Our crack team of reporters, who have been following bennifer 24/7 for the past year, have discovered the following:

"The sources said that sometime last week Affleck called close associates telling them that he and Lopez had broken up. On Saturday Affleck was spotted gambling and sunning himself without Lopez at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, they said.

Meanwhile, sources said that Lopez on Friday flew to her Miami residence and had made plans to head to Canada where she is filming a new movie with Richard Gere."

John Goodman and Ignore List Inductee Ceremony

I saw Goodman on Inside the Actor's Studio last night. Thoughts"

1) I really really hope this great actor loses some weight bc he has a major case of "fat voice" and is starting to look like death pool material.

2) Movie most discussed by Lipton? The Big Lebowski. Movie that got the most applause? The Big Lebowski. I still say the role of Walter Sobchek rivals that of Jeremy Irons as Claus Von Bulow in its greatness and is the most overlooked role ever.

3) I have seen Lipton interview two others who did the Big L and the first time, he didnt seem too enthused with the flick and the second time, he was warmer (for him) about it. This time he called it one of his favorites. THus proving that this is a movie that only gets better on repeated viewing.

4) Goodman's favorite movie? The Big L. ANd he said he was sad that movies that great so rarely come along. Ditto.

5) I hate James Lipton and his little alternative pronunciations like "quasi" as "Kway-zi", Pompous fuck. I bet he says "bona-fidy" for bona fide.

***

Connect the Dots will be joining my Ignore list as a prime example of a theme sock turned primary in an attempt for a legendarily unpopular, unloved and unfunny poster to reinvent himself. The jig is up and you are gone. But you will have to stay in the basement bc I would not wish you upon event the likes of Cheval. But not too worry. You won't be lonely bc you will have one of your secondary socks to talk to. Magic 8ball is also getting kicked to the basement where he and his unfunny act will be collecting dust. I know how you love to talk to your socks, psycho.

In the alternative, it proves that Lipton is as inconsistent as he is obsequious and hence that his opinion of a film is irrelevant. Cf. your item 5.

Fan sites are reporting that Jun Balloon won the second part of the final HOH competition. That means she will face the other fatso in the final part of the competition. Looks like Ratbert may be in trouble. His nervous twitches and tics should be at an all-time high this week.

Horror film round up

Cabin Fever is a really solid little horror movie. Very good. If you liked "scream" or "I know what you did last summer," you will hate it. If you miss the days when horror movies actually tried to horrify and frighten you, go but do not order popcorn. The guy behind me rained popcorn down on my head when jumping several times.

Jeepers Creepers 2 was OK. It hung together better than the first one, but lost whatever the spark was in JC1 that caught my interest. It was much more homogenized, and it lacked any edge to make it at all disturbing/frightening. But, it did have something resembling a coherent plot, which is more than you can honestly say for the first one. And the classical/general knowledge allusions were handled deftly - I was reasonably impressed that they used those more than the in-crowd-horror references that lard so much of the crap these days.

Also, I saw the original Phantasm again. Now, the whole movie (whole franchise) makes not a lick of sense, but, damn, it is a really good little horror movie. It is really beautiful. I have particularly nice things to say about the lighting design. Someone put that movie together with real care and love. (And atrocious acting, but whatever.) One pity: SciFi edits out enough gore that some of the scenes become incoherent.

I anticipate the opening of (yet another) remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre with loathing and trepidation. I am really afraid of how badly they might fuck it up.

God What a Lousy Weekend

Dios mio... It was like the fucking fates conspired against everything good in the universe this weekend. I walked out of Court Friday to discover Johnny Cash had died and over the course of the weekend watched the Birds make asses of themselves against the Pats, Paterno drop a win to Bowden and OSU squeak by in a game NCState should've fucking won... It was like a massive lining up of black holes in the universe - a harbinger of doom. The only sign that god hadn't forsaken the forces of good was the prison-raping Michigan handed Notre Dame.

I hear the train a comin'
It's rollin' 'round the bend,
And I ain't seen the sunshine,
Since, I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin' on,
But that train keeps a-rollin',
On down to San Antone.

When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns,"
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.

I bet there's rich folks eatin',
In a fancy dining car,
They're probably drinkin' coffee,
And smokin' big cigars,
But I know I had it comin',
I know I can't be free,
But those people keep a-movin',
And that's what tortures me.

Well, if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine,
I bet I'd move out over a little,
Farther down the line,
Far from Folsom Prison,
That's where I want to stay,
And I'd let that lonesome whistle,
Blow my Blues away.

From the Highwayman:

I fly a starship across the Universe divide.
And when I reach the other side,
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again.
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain;
But I will remain.
And I'll be back again...

I have seen Willie and Waylon together, but I wished I'd seen them all...Willie, Waylon, Kris and the Man in Black. Modern day country music is an abomination and an embarassment.

Ther is no such thing as a canteloupe martini. You may have had a delicious cocktail of some sort. But it was not a martini.
