pss: fwiw, ftr, fyi, I think this is a legitimate situation for a citisen to exercise his/her second amendment rights. for retributive purposes.
I didn't mean to say that Myron wasn't responsible for his actions. I've consistently contended that bedshitters are accountable for their actions. Both stories are tragic.

By the way, you do realize that Second Amendment rights are the only reason for armed police officers to use flash grenades and guns in executing arrest warrants, right?

No, I didn't know that. Sounds more like a convenient excuse for the inability to competently do one's job; although I do realise that there is not a competency test to become a police officer, which is why the job is so attractive to some of the worst and dumbest of our society.

By the by, did they find a gun on the seven year old?

I find it hilarious in the midst of this tragedy that you would take an accidental shooting -- the type of which kills 1,500 people a year, many of them children -- as an argument for why ordinary people should be armed and cops disarmed.

The fact remains that all the armchair quarterbacks who are convinced a felony murder warrant can be served by grandmothers carrying kittens and puppies would be the ones who would shoot the fucking place to bits if you told them to break down the door. People shoot their own kids and spouses when they hear something go "bump" in the night, but a cop actually serving a warrant on a person known to have committed a murder? Woodsman, spare that tree.

"Outside the home, the department's special response team was prepared to go in. Film crews with A&E's "The First 48" reality show, which follows police departments nationwide during the crucial 48 hours after a homicide is committed, were taping the team for a documentary. Police spokesman John Roach said the tapes will be reviewed as part of the investigation."

Better article

I would hold off on concluding that this was accidental. I'm not concluding it wasn't, but in the situation it is just as likely that the cop intentionally shot without being fully aware of what he was shooting at.

If cops are accidentally discharging weapons during a raid, they are truly badly trained and the city should have hell to pay. You don't put someone in a situation like this who isn't truly expert at handling a firearm.

I'm receptive to this. I took the article at face value that the officer's gun discharged when he bumped into the woman in the dark, and that's premature.

BTW, I am always receptive to the argument that the city has hell to pay. I don't object to civil liability for the acts of cops. What I object to is the idea that criminal charges or termination should follow based on a bad outcome plus the idea that any idiot could have done it better. When it comes to cops and violence, we act like we can hire a guy to burn a pile of leaves in the backyard and then get him arrested for being an arsonist when the fire burns out of control. Or it looks like he's enjoying it a little too much. What cops do, they do with our delegated authority, and we should own up to what that frequently means.

.
There are no accidents, although there could be negligence. The State should not be taking innocent lives of citisens either negligently or intentionally. I am not saying this case is an argument for arming citisens and disarming cops, but rather an argument for the citisenry bumrushing city hall and letting it burn, baby, burn.

2. This would never happen in a place like Medina, WA. Even if the cops knew without doubt that a suspect was hiding out in Bill Gates' house.

hmmm, was the shooter cop white? the situation is screwed up, but the city of Detroit is all screwed up in almost every possible way- one of the few ways it isn't screwed up is having a white "occupier" police force.

c'mon, *everyone* hates black people. That's what's implied by how we, as a citizenry, allow the police to act (and not act).

I don't think any idiot can do it better, but I do think they are in a position of higher trust where more should be expected of them. As with elected officials. More criminal cases should be brought against cops.

I have finally found a contemporary soul mate of yours on state's rights - I'd suggest you talk eighth amendment jurisprudence with Justice Woolard.

I would make a list of idiots who agree with you about one thing, but none of them have accomplished anything and all are living lives of desperate obscurity. BTW, Rebecca Romijn says hi. Actually, she didn't.

Normally I yadda yadda yadda, but I feel compelled to point out that whatever my complicated feelings about states' rights may be, they do not translate into support for the Arizona immigration law.
