Exactly. The last thing Bush wants is to actually get the amendment passed. He just wants to run the issue for all its worth through November, then dump it like a cross-eyed blind date. He's played the same game with abortion - technically opposed, but never going to actually take any real action to tip over the apple cart. He'd have to have shit for brains to actually try to get an amendment, considering how everyone already thinks he's a radical nut with no respect for the system.
If Alfred E. Neuman gets a second term, thank the Mass. Supreme Court for handing him the ammo to do so. If these judges could have held tight a little while longer, he'd still be stuttering about why the Iraq debacle wasn't predicated on lies. Instead, he's whipping the Red State idiots into a frenzy about how queer are going to brainwash their children out of heterosexuality.

As a speech case and a "what's okay under the first amendment/religion clause" Isn't this the same "play in the joints"? That is, Washington could have funded the scholarship, but wasn't required to, and wasn't prohibited from doing so. UVa could have funded the religion or not, so long as there wasn't viewpoint discrimination, which is where they went astray.

my answer: Yesterday, I laid out in e-mail what I couldn't articulate on Saturday night. Stomach clenched for the rest of the day until I got a reply, which helped things considerably. Six years ago, I drunkenly e-mailed the words "I love you" to someone. Big mistake, partially because that act led to a relationship, and partially because I didn't mean it.
Alternate poll question:
Does anyone know of a long distance relationship that's worked?
my answer: Several, but the key to each was that the long distance was understood by both parties to be a temporary thing. Two I know of right now are in the "prepare to move closer to one another but haven't done it yet" stage. Immigration is a pain in the ass.) I've been in one, and it was a very bad idea.
Just curious....

I think you meant to post this on Fashion. Most of the people on this Board, besides Atticus and myself, have no relationships. They sit home alone arguing with each other all night as they drink too much, again. Ty flits between the posts editing all night, but thats as close to human interaction as it gets.

So true. Sometimes, when it gets really bad, I log on just to argue with myself.

At least you win half of those. It's not as good as Hank does, but Barry Bonds doesn't hit that well.

My secret's simple.
You guys just need to upgrade your alcohol. I'm drinking JW Black, and that comes with bonus points when they total up the arguments.

BTW, Hastert's spokesperson explained that they were worried about taking a political hit: "He is also concerned it will become a political football if this thing is extended and it is released in the middle of the presidential campaign."
Classy. So Bush presumably wants to be re-elected because of the job he's done in the war on terrorism, but we don't want people to be informed about 9/11 during the election.

Let's be fair here. Both sides were trying to wrangle the schedule for political purposes. The Repubs do NOT want this released right before the election. The Dems DO want this out, preferably about two weeks pre-vote. Both sides have taken concrete and visible steps to divorce the scheduling from the true needs of the committee. So, yeah, both sides suck on this one.
