I think you misunderstood her -- it's her fish that needs the bicycle. Except she meant that her fish really doesn't need a bicycle.

Heh, so it does. I like the lines of it. I also hate you for having enough room in your bedroom for a chaise.

This is the "more traditional" chaise? Huh. 'Round our place, the main debate is mid-Victorian (Mr.) vs. French Empire (me). I lost the "stark modernism" battle long ago.

advice on diamond stud earings

I have an anniversary coming up, and decided that diamond stud earings might make a nice gift. (I'll try to go estate diamonds to avoid any blood diamond issues, etc.)

I am an idiot about this stuff, and know nothing about diamonds. Any advice on the grading process or whatever they call it would be especially appreciated. Opinions about what is an appropriate size and estimates of likely cost would be welcome.

Main specifications are that it must be (1) leather, suede or ultrasuede and (2) not all squared-off and couchey looking (I don't want some sectional sofa type thing). I found one that I really liked the other day in a local furniture store (custom order, around $3,000) that was sort of Jetsons' mod. I've been trying to find a picture to post, but not luck so far. Only problem I had with it was that it might not fit in with the other furnishings in the room, which are more traditional. So I just found this -

What does the FB think?
I haven't liked Cantoni furniture as much as, say Ligne Roset (see, for example, lover series below), but that looks pretty nice. I saw a wonderful chaise earlier this month in Warrington, but I didn't have time to stop and really examine it.

Word to the wise, I'm one who strongly believes that it's ok to mix and match furniture of different styles and different eras, so I'm likely to put a Le Corbusier chaise next to my Stuckley mission desk without blinking an eye.

Wearing context is most important, and must be your starting point. Are you looking for something for court, or just for lying around while reading briefs?

has much information on it.

Size depends on woman's face and ears.

Reading briefs while lounging around the hacienda, of course. I'd never wear them to court -- diamonds before 5 pm are vulgar.

The same googlable site has a link to a leather version (scroll down).

ANd a lot of places will let you pick the upholstery for the piece separately, so it's just a question of whether ultrasuede looks good on a traditional chaise.

Here's a link to the Tiffany definitions site, which gives you the language:

http://www.tiffany.com/expertise/dia...y/default.asp?

Size is "whatever would look pretty on her and not crush your bank account." However, when budget becomes an issue with diamonds, go for quality over size, every time. Unless she's a completely cheesy tool of QVC, she'll agree.

As to the chaise--love 'em. They're temples to slothful self-indulgence. Pompanoosuc Mills' Calais line has one (no photo on their site pompanoosucmills.com, but it looks like a longer version of the chair.) While you're at it, I'm afraid I'm just engrossed in my trashy novel--will you be a sweetheart and get me another glass of wine?

Wow. I like that. Website says it only comes in fabric though. There is a location in Dallas though, so I might swing by at some point and check out what they can do. Thanks for the suggestion.

And TM, I agree with you, which is why I liked the Jetsons' one I saw the other day better (no arms).

If she has attached lobes going smaller is probably better; detached lobes seem like they could handle something bigger. If they seem to be sparkley and don't look bad next to the other (more expensive) diamonds at the store, that's good enough for me. They're up in ears, so there's not really much light going through them so I think any flaws or whatever that aren't HUGE aren't going to be noticeable.

I am a fan of white gold or platinum because regular gold makes the diamond look kind of yellow.
