Observation
Waiting all week on 24hr (or less) notice for a jury trial that does not get called sucks. It sucks for me. Sucks for my client. Sucks hugely for witnesses. Sucks for my babysitter. Sucks in general. That this is the 6th jury docket I have sat through for this case only to get bumped again, probably to March, sucks. Is there not a better system somewhere?

I saw Shopgirl. Loved it. But I also loved the book. There you have it. Call me a pussy.
Capote and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang were well liked by people whose judgment I trust.

You know who wouldn't pick your planet? Suckers! Especially since you're on the way to Cabo now. Ahhh, the life of an NCS.

Being a grown up--poll
Friend just posted his shock at finding out his wife is pregnant. He talks about how this is the first major life-altering event of his life, and he's really, really feeling the brunt of being a grown up.
Sort of reminded me of a conversation I had with another friend of mine as we were walking through the appliances section at Best Buy and ooohing and aaaahing over the Dyson vacuum cleaners and that mega-dryer.
The first time I really felt like an adult wasn't when I graduated from college or bought my first car or got my first apartment or got my first job or even when I bought my house. The first time I really felt like an adult was when I started researching hot water heaters.
There is no reason in the world to know the difference between one hot water heater and the other or to really get excited about the energy saving qualities of a tankless hot water heater unless you're an adult. No one else cares.
So, when's the first time you really felt like an adult?

First time I shaved on a Saturday morning without an external reason (e.g. a meeting or something) for doing so.

When I realized heath insurance wasn't something with which you are born.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

When the hot water heater flooded my house and I realized it was my job to a) clean it up and b) find (and pay) someone to come in and fix the damn thing.
Also, there's nothing like bringing an infant home to make you think "my god, who's going to take care of this thing?" Only to realize it's YOU.

The first time I got arrested and was able to post bail without my parent's assistance.
eta: the second time was when I felt compelled to go up on my roof and clean out the gutters (which had never been cleaned in 4 years and the clogging of which was resulting in flooding in the house) as I actually owned the fvcking thing and couldn't call the landlord and complain.
There was about 20 year gap between the first and second occassions.
