First, because delegation is not as satisfying as handing it back to the guy. Second, why shit on the junior person when it's the senior lawyer she doesn't like? Third, on an actual professional note, since she is not going to be around to manage it, it's actually more appropriate for her not to delegate it.

Oh, yes, you're right; I need to make it sting, but be just nice enough to encourage the hope that will lead to the sucking-up.

What you are missing is that my firm is fairly horizontal, and my dept head (the atty in question here) is a control freak. I'll suggest perhaps he wants to give it to associate A, but I want no part of it, and I'll leave it to him to do with it as he pleases.

Anway, this information has really no bearing on my post aside from providing some background on my mental state. Suffice it to say, I am still drunk.

Anyway, I took the bus downtown, as I always do. A woman sat next to me. I immediately thought "huh, I wonder if this is ppnyc? ppmpls?" A few minutes after ppmpls sat down she turned to me abruptly and said, "Does your father have a college degree?" I said, "My father? Yes. Why?" She said, "Some people have to lie about it."

I thought it was odd, but let it go. She continued to stare at me, and finally broke the silence with the following. "Did you know that female sumo wrestling is going to be big in the US? It is. It's because of all the fat people. All the fat women have to do something so they are going to be sumo wrestlers." Silence. Silence. "Look at all these fat people. That might be sexy in the country but here in the city, uh uh. I hate fat people." Silence. Silence. "Look at all these fat people."

It was quite odd, especially because this woman was perhaps a size 12? 14? Not morbidly obese, but certainly not an ideal weight. And the face? A 2.5. Personality, negative 2. Clearly she was off her meds.

I cannot wait to see her again.
This is your best material.

And it's too bad because I think Negraneu is cool as hell.

I finally finished it. I didn't care that they kicked Das It off because he was an Eminem wannabe anyway. Thanks, but we already have an Eminem. Keep it movin'.

The fat chick or the dude with the deformed nose is going to win.

MC Serch is the co-founder of 3rd Bass (along with Pete Nice), a highly popular white group in the early to mid-90s. They had a number of good songs and Serch is accepted in the hip hop community. He actually gave Nas (widely thought of as one of the best lyricists in the history of hip hop) some early light on his "Halftime" and "Back to the Grill Again" songs. Serch was down with everyone and he and Pete Nice attacked phony rappers like Vanilla Ice. He was produced by Prince Paul* who also produced some of De La Soul's early stuff and worked with many, many other artists as well.

In the evolution of white rappers, there was The Beastie Boys, 3rd Bass, House of Pain and then Eminem. So, he's probably one of the only ones qualified to run the show.

TM

*Who is also Serch's good friend, a producer of White Rappers and the black guy you'll probably see regularly on the show.

eta: His seminal moment came when he took the stage at The Apollo with his corny glasses and a white-boy-high-top afro with "3rd Bass" carved in the back and blew everyone away with the first verse of Steppin' to the A.M. (still a great song). I think he's from Far Rockaway (not the best of neighborhoods) and married a black woman and has been in hip hop since close to the beginning.

This post got me looking around the internet a bit, and I found an article underground hip hop being listened to by white audiences, which we discussed earlier. In fact, the article mentions Dead Prez. According to the article, it is not just a Minnesota phenomenon, although there is a quote from local rapper Brother Ali, from the Rhymesayers crew I was talking about when we last discussed this subject.

It is a momentous day. I think this is the first time you and I have ever agreed about something.

You may want to consider changing your mind.

Firm is great. Practice group is not. But the most important thing is that this is no longer my problem.

It got me looking around the internet a bit too, where I found a video of Steppin' to the AM and was instantly transported back to a time when MC Hammer-esque dance moves were the sine qua non of all aspiring rappers, black and white alike. Pure magic.

here's the cast for the Hairspray (the musical) flick. John Travolta as Edna? Is Harvey F. not available, or is middle America demanding their drag queen actors not be gay guys?

And doesn't this offend some tenat of scientology?

This article is very sad to me. Stuff like this is depressing: "After 15 years of gangstas and bling, perhaps hip-hop's Black audience has been so inundated with material garbage that they don't want an uplifting message?" or ""So many Black people don't want to hear it," Zion continues. "They want that thug shit. That's why I'm thankful for the audience we do have" or "When I get in front of a Black audience it's like, 'Finally you're here, feel me.' We've done shows in Chicago and São Paulo, Brazil, and it feels good to be in front of our people when they are feeling it. But there are some thugged-out crowds where our message doesn't resonate, and Black folks will say that they aren't trying to hear hip-hop artists remind them of their problems." But there must be a lot to it.

I did a paper in college many years ago about how hip hop had taken the place of the radical black leader in the black community. Another piece could be done on how the radical black voice has been stolen or squelched altogether.

Definitely an interesting article. And I'll have to give it to you, because I am simply not tied into the underground world of white hip hop or white fans of hip hop. I can say that when I think of underground rappers, they're mostly kids in brooklyn who appear on mix tapes and have not yet signed a deal. They're still who they are until somebody with the power of a record deal can shape them into the next "thug" who'll move a million cds in the first week.

It's both depressing and it isn't. I mean, it is depressing for all the reasons you mention. But there is also the fact that intelligent, conscious hip hop (both black and white) can come to places like Minneapolis and finding a strong and avid fan base and hip hop community. It is a white audience, but at least it pays the bills and allows these rappers to travel and be heard in the Midwest. And if it were not for local rappers like Atmosphere and Brother Ali (mentioned in the article), I probably would not know about Mr. Lif and the Perceptionists and lots of other underground hip hop. But it is definitely weird to go to a Coup or Dead Prez show and have the audience be overwhelmingly white.
