Dead Board Poll

This isn't a fantasy poll. This is a practical one based on your means and current situation. If you are so wealthy that you could up and move to the French Riviera and never work again, then that is a legit answer.

TM
I would move back to the Bay Area in a heartbeat, if the right job came up. I've sort of trolled the job sites and there are a few in my area. I wouldn't be able to buy a house there though.

I could move to Austin, but the market there is pretty tight unless I wanted to work in the AG's office. That'd be a bit of a roll back in terms of income.

I'd love to pick up and move to Taos, New Mexico, but the lawyer population there is very high for a county with only 8000 residents. I'd have to do consulting out of state in order to make a living. Or else move into a trailer and work on my screenplay.

No. I'd really want to live as a rich Parisien. It's all about the lifestyle. My best friend, who lived in NYC for 5 years said it would be a fabulous place to live if only she had 7 figure salary. Otherwise, not so fun. It's the same with Paris. It would have to be fabulous.

Paris is much cheaper than NYC though. And much different. I agree that you need a decent amount of money for NYC. I don't think the same is true for Paris. You can't compare the two cities at all. Parisians are much more laid back than New Yorkers.

Poll

San Francisco or San Diego (relatively realistic), or London or Munich (somewhat less so, but not total fantasies).

One of my best friends just got flown out to Santa Fe for an interview. He took the job and drove out 5 days ago. It's a whole different world. He can't wait to hike and fly fish. Sounds cool.

The poll asked for an answer based upon who you are. A non-native French speaker would have a pretty miserable time in Paris, I'm betting.

If I could move my practice and preserve the comp. NYC has got to be the place. I think you need to make alot to live there, and avoid an ugly daily commute, or a tiny apartment. But enough $$ to own a townhouse in Manhatten, would be pretty good.

If we could get a little loose on "realistic choice," Kyoto would be wonderful. Great food, there is industry and I assume legal work.

God are you a dumbshit. Our communication had clearly digressed from the poll. We were talking about how you don't need that much money in Paris and that it's less expensive than NYC. I have no idea whether NFH speaks french and don't care since it has nothing to do with our topic.

Now, to address YOUR topic: I lived near Paris for two months and could have stayed longer. I never had a miserable time and I speak little french.

I'd move to London in a heartbeat. I'd also move to New York, San Francisco, or Washington. Any of those would require me to be making a lot more than I'm maing right now, though, so my standard of living didn't suffer.

If I was going to stay in-house instead of going back to BIGLAW, which is what any of the former cities would require income-wise, I think I'd really just as soon stay in Chicago or find a smaller city with similar sensibilities and economic climate.

London
Raleigh/Durham N.C.
Norfolk or Richmond V.A.
Toronto

Pretty much in that order, both in terms of preference and practicality.

Santa Fe would be on there, but I've spent enough time there to know that, unless my "practical" plans include swapping lawyerdom for opening a boutique of indian-made luxury goods for the tourists (not a crazy idea, but ... not particularly practical, either), it isn't much of an option. I'd retire there, though, if I had enough money (RE has gotten outrageous in the area, even with my NYC standards I was pretty shocked). Actually, given the amazingly crap quality of native american arts I've seen on the east coast, I could make a killing bringing stuff from NM/AZ out here - even mediocre junk is hell and gone better quality than the overpriced shit sold this side of the Mississippi. Hmmm...

Given that it is not the capital city, it might be helpful to have a legal education relevant to the country you would be living in.

But then, for all we know, you do have a Japanese law degree. Will you be acquiring comfort women? It rather fits. I will send champagne.

What is it with you and rules?

But no, Paris is fabulous (except in the heat of summer) even for a person who only took some French classes in high school and college.
And you think Japan would be easier for a non-native Japanese? There, it's not just about the language, but also the culture. I knew a guy, 6'4" blonde, fluent in Japanese who lived there 2 years and he was always putting his foot in it.

I'm sure Hank is, at a minimum (heh heh), quite short, though his hair color (if there is any left?) is non-obvious. And given his obsession with the rules, he must be fluent in both conversational and technical Japanese. Kudos to you, Hank!

Maybe you'd have to leave lawyerdom, but my non-lawyer buddy who just got a fantastic job there did not have a stellar resume. He has a real estate/CPA background. The pay is pretty good (relative to COL) and the work is very laid back.

I don't care about rules, I was just disagreeing about Paris. It was sort of fun as a college kid, it was very nice when I was there on business/expense account, it was intimidating and tough to navigate when I was there with kids. I think day to day life would be tough, as an adult. That Coltrane's college trip went well doesn't mean fuck-all.

Human fucking spirit, is this some kind of virus spreading throughout the party? It was like five damn minutes ago that you said:
