He hated living there. Every day of it. Of course he hated Chicago, too. Well, not really Chicago - Naperville. Of course the fact that he did jail time there probably didn't help.
I spent some time last weekend with a friend who was sentenced to do time at UTSA for a masters degree. Apparently, she had similar feelings about living in San Antonio as your friend. She fled to Austin as soon as she could.

That said, San Antonio is a charming place to visit for the weekend. The King William District doesn't get as much play in the guidebooks as the Riverwalk and the Alamo, but I think it's very nice. Mi Tierra has excellent margaritas.

I don't think I've ever seen a scorpion in San Antonio, but you never know. There used to be a lot of scorpions in central Texas, but they got over run by fire ants about twenty years ago.

Wow. Good show (so far). Basically a retread of "The Job" except in a FDNY firehouse. Strong language, graphic depiction of death and dead people, good picture of how basic humanity also motivates the racism and sexism of the environment. Has a kind of "Dead Like Me" and "Six Feet Under" feel to it, as Leary's character is literally haunted by the six people he's watched die in fires or at 9/11.

Broadcast networks are incapable of producing a show with an anti-hero at its center without trying to make em's obvious character flaws somehow lovable. They've left all the difficult and interesting characters to HBO and now basic cable.
I agree. I think I saw the first episode, and it was really quite good. Plus the theme song is that catchy "C'mon C'mon" song from the Von Bondies. I will have to set the dvr to record it--check it out.

I have not seen it, but speaking of new shows, I kind of got sucked into watching Entourage last night (by sucked in, I mean I was too lazy to get up and do something else), and it alternated between being kind of funny and compelling (Jeremy Piven is quite funny) and on the other hand, like a train wreck you can't stop watching because you are squirming about how these guys suck up to their famous friend and are just pathetic (fat guy begs girl to make out with him and in return he'll show her where his star friend eats breakfast) and thus also compelling. thoughts?

Spoiler space.

2 lines - that's all you get.
I am so damned happy that Holly got voted out last night. She is the most irritating person on the planet. That, and the fact that Jase doesn't have a "cuddle buddy" anymore. Could that term be any more annoying?

The guy who's playing it really smart is Marvin. He's going to let each side pick each other off and continue to be the swing vote when he can.

The "girl power" thing is getting ready to collapse because Diane's a bitch who can't really control Drew and Karen's not much of a leader.

Naperville is like Columbus, Ohio, but much more expensive. Columbus is a poor man's Atlanta, and Atlanta is a suburban-sprawl nightmare of a land-locked, chain-restaurant dump of a city.

Naperville and Chicago might actually be polar opposites.

HI!

That was a yes or no question.

So you're saying that Naperville is a lot like Anaheim?

Naperville has a jail? The idyllic suburb called the "Best City in Which to Raise Kids in the US" by some study or other?

If it does, I'm sure it's very nice. Does it have an Olive Garden for a cafeteria?

No. Naperville was where he was arrested. He did time in a fed prison - don't know which one, he doesn't like to talk about it much. And I didn't really push him on the subject. I'm surprised he told me at all.
So Naperville was full of bad memories for him - it's also where his wife left him for her stupid abusive ex-boyfriend.
He moved.

Friday Ramblings

1. Actual fashion question. Why is everyone wearing those Chinese Mesh Slippers Link here since all the pictures would have screwed with the margins and pissed off the few of us that reading the bored this afternoon. I've seen them in my very ethnic neighborhood and in the hallways of my firm. Am I alone in thinking that they are ugly and llok out of place without a matching house-coat?

2. Chapter 6 of Galatians reads like one of Hank's posts after he's been drinking.

3. Anyone have the story on John Kerry's first wife, Julia Thorne? I know I should probably post that on the PB, but I'm afraid to go over there.

4. Where is everybody?

Er, you have much more interesting friends than me. My friends just get drunk and bet on the dog races while slowly losing their souls.
