that was bad, I am sorry.

And since I am Gertrude, I will write a (bad) poem for you.

Paigow is much like the sun in the sky
hidden at night by the moon
but knowing her glory remains alive
and back she'll be ere noon.
Oh, oh, pick me! pick me! I like all cards and have played only a little bridge, so no unfair advantage here. Maybe I could discern the rules from a book too, having played once or twice. I also enjoy hearts. No real tennis thing though...

I feel so pathetic. Second begging post this month.

This magazine is unreadable. And I love reading about sports.

Actually, Sport's Illustrated used to be good, but sucks now. What happened?
It's because they're trying to pander to too many people. Mia Hamm was on the cover last week. Really? During the playoff run and the first weeks of baseball - you put Mia Hamm on the cover. AND the freaking articles have gotten SOOOO long. Used to be you could read the articles in like 15 minutes. And the only good pictures are the first 5 pages. There used to be good pics throughout.

That said, I still read it every Monday on my way to work for the Steve Rushin stuff.

Edited to add - you're right - ESPN the mag is pure crap.

Canasta! How did you know? I learned how to play on a ski trip out west a few years ago. That's a fun one. For now I can only play on the computer. Cribbage is a good one too.

Why is it so hard to get people to sit down and play a game of cards? When I was growing up, card parties were all the rage with my parents and their friends. I have Rat-Pack-esque recollections of those parties. They all thought it cute that I wanted to take a puff off of my Mom's Kent cigarettes.

Anne
My goal this weekend is to teach the SO to play a card game. Must remember to pack Hoyle's.

That and I could use an excuse to relocate to the Notheast. Damn winters are holding me back right now, but maybe if there was bridge club in front of a fireplace with warm, spiked beverages, I could survive the October-April crap weather. Well, maybe not.

Well, almost a full two countries care about their women's soccer teams.

Can't they skip all of this World Cup nonsense and just have the U.S. play China in a 7-game series?

Just relocate a little further south and everything will be better.

I can't imagine how one wouldn't have preferences. Among my relatives, I find:

Mysterious uncle who collects "industry information" and other corporate intelligence for multinationals (who once disappeared for a few months and we later found out he was in prison in China)

A farmer

Parole officer in the rural south

A caterer

A cousin who IS the guy in your company's system's department

An assortment of fun-loving party-head southerners

Artist - but when she says she's been painting we never know if she means pictures or houses

Deeply religious church organist

Housewife in suburban southern CA devoted to crochetting and geneology

Insane alcoholic great-aunt who thinks she's Scarlett O'Hara

Drug-doing fuck-up

National figure in the hospice movement

Mormon convert who sits like a lump and makes his wife do everything for him

A civil war reenactor

Nuclear submarine engineer

Elementary school teacher

Cousin who races souped-up VW Sirocos

Housewife in New Jersey

Indie film production manager/producer (with an IMDB entry longer than my deal sheet)

How could I not have preferences?

Did you mean the first weeks of football? The Women's World Cup started this week. To the rest of the world that is a huge sporting event. Unfortunately Ihave to follow most of the games via the internet or on the Spanish channels (love that Gooooooooooal Guy). Anyway, as a soccer nut, I was glad to see Mia on the cover. Fascinating article too.

When I was growing up and participating in sports, women were supposed to play the pretty games like tennis, field hockey, golf and gymnastics. When it got to the point where I could beat guys in butterfly I was considered freakish. People thought it strange that I wanted/needed to play soccer (they still do) and went in front of the school board to lobby for a women's varsity team (finally got one my junior year). Acceptance of women in sports has come a long way in the last 20-30 years.

Chalk up another vote for the suckiness of ESPN the Magazine.

Card parties do not utilize clay or drawing with your eyes closed. They also require attention span, and Chesterfields in addition to Kents.
