With our recent rainy weather, I certainly understand why so many choose very large golf-type umbrellas (the very long ones that don't fit in a bag or briefcase). However, I would like to ask people to please, please pay attention to how you carry them.

It is not uncommon to see someone carrying the umbrellas horizontally. The result is that as the person's arm swings, the pointed end is thrust forward. I have seen one woman hit in the stomach.

Perhaps if you mention it in your column, they'll be a little more cautious.

In the late 1990s, shrewd law firm managers deepened their litigation, bankruptcy, and white collar crime practices in hopes of capturing business during an anticipated economic downturn.

Now they're quietly calculating which practices will ripen next.

Many of D.C.'s biggest firms are preparing for a transactional comeback, hanging on to corporate lawyers despite low billables and even starting to hunt for laterals. Others are honing in on European regulatory work or arbitration. Still others say that, while evergreen, health care is a solid bet for growth.

What they all agree on, though, is the necessity of preparing for cyclical shifts. Litigation is expected to remain strong at most firms, but there are indicators that practices like bankruptcy have passed their zenith.

The Chicago Reader (local free Chicago paper) used to chronicle performance art that was similar several years ago. It had a lot less of the frat-boy yuppie-hours feel though.

The one I always remembered was telling 20 peole to dress in entirely black clothes (or something similar) and appear at appointed Elevated stations in the Loop to greet the first person they encountered on an El platform. At 7 AM on a Sunday morning. And give the person encountered a rose without saying a word. Then get on the next train and go home. It was supposed to me more theater of the absurd than theater of a meet-market.

No "flash", no "mob", and no wonder it never seemed like no more than 8 or 10 people could ever be organized for such random events. Still, it seems way more absurd to do such things in a solitary manner.

So screw New York "art". Chicago is where its at.

Proposal for New Thread Posting Convention: Let Individual Subjects Get Their Own Threads.

I am active on several community bulletin boards that use a discussion forum program similar to this one (pHp, etc) and I think that the functionality of this DC board could be greatly enhanced. It is far more functional than Infirmation's antiquated Greedy Associates board, but at the same time I don't think we are getting the most out of this forum.

Maybe this is unwelcome, but I've decided to take it upon myself to campaign for this. Could we please start posting new topics in their own individual threads? It would make discussion much more accessible.

For example, the Chicago forum might have 50 individual threads like:

Latham & Watkins

Job openings in Chicago

Restaurants

Layoff Rumor at Firm X

Altheimer disintegrates.

Moving to Chicago--Chicago Housing

Illinois Bar Exam

Bonuses at Sidley

etc.

A forum like the Chicago forum would probably get 15 new threads per month. This system would be far more functional than the current system where we have 250 posts covering a number of topics in a single thread.

We been over this before . . .

1) There's hardly been enough traffic to warrant multiple threads
2) Multiple threads disrupts the conversation
3) Multiple threads mean people may miss things if they click on "read most recent post" or "last read post" since that function takes you only to the thread of the post.

That said, people are welcome to post new threads. I've let them linger a few days and then merged them into the main thread. I think that accomplishes the best of both, because it gives people a chance to have their own thread, but also avoids having that information disappear into the ether after a few weeks.

Anyway, I'm certainly open to suggestions, but I'd like to keep going this way unless there's a groundswell of complaints (which I'm sure there now will be).

Finding one, good or not, is hard enough.

There's a stand in the JW Marriott that did a pretty good job. Others have reported to me one in the building Hogan & Hartson is in (International Place?).
