best: Steve Martin - Has done countless sketches/filmed pieces as a guest on Letterman. Also great on Carson back in the day.
worst: lately, Vince Vaughn - Duchovny should have started hanging around Luke Wilson. At least he'd have a career.* You'd think double-down Trent would be a good interview, but the man needs a writer to be smarmy funny - how sad is that?
[QUIBBLE]Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr. are great entertainers, though their songs have been rather weak lately. HCJr. shouldn't apologize for his music, he should be arrested for mugging his way through W&G. Unwatchable.
And Richard Lewis (who is not funny now, though he was funny when he was alternating between coke benders, alcoholic sprees, and crippling depression) is responsible for one of the great moments in talk show history. He does the Later show with Bob Costas. He kills so much that NBC doesn't air the episode because the execs think it's silly to have Costas constantly laughing during the 22 minutes. They have Lewis on again as a make-good, but he spends most of his time kvetching about being dropped, so they air clips from the other show so you can understand what they're talking about.[/QUIBBLE]
Oh, and Carson was the best talk show host ever. EVER. Leno went from awkward to fawning. Letterman's went from prickly to soft (with occasional flashes of ire), but Carson was
always smooth.
* although Duchovny is a Yalie with a pile of syndication loot from X-Files and a hot wife. Why read lines when you can wake up, shag your hot wife, get some coffee, go for a jog around Malibu, play with your kids, and
not deal with agents or lawyers?**
** of course, according to
imdb.org he has three films coming out this year.
