New York always has something going on, but it looks like it might start having lots more going on........
here's a photo from the ACT UP naked demostration
spree: bare butts!
http://nyc.indymedia.org/newswire/di...3375/index.php
And no Thurgreed jokes, he really is about 6'11" so that's not him, and no fatty jokes- yes I know the obvious one about a vacation visit.
I will be telling myself the woman in the third photo is one of you, you know, when I'm alone. she appears to have a somewhat untrimmed appearance, which might not look good head on, but does add to the rear view.

I like the fact she has a purse. Very femme.

Why have I never heard of Maria Stepanova? At 6'8", some would argue she is too tall for all but Thurgreed and Hank. But although I may only be 5'5" on a good day (6'4" for internet purposes), I am not intimidated. I think the whole "women will not date shorter men" thing is a myth anyway.

Actually, I'd say she has only one canckle, which could be a good thing, but probably isn't.

Coupla related things

I heard on the radio yesterday afternoon that whites are no longer the majority in Texas. First time since 1800s that this has happened. The change in demographics was primarily Hispanic. I called my mother to tell her that her gringa reign has come to an end (though to be fair, she was imported to the state by my Hispanic dad and she’s been outnumbered 5-1 in the family since my youngest sister was born). I knew if we waited long enough, the pendulum would start to swing back. I’d give it another twenty years, and we’ll be back on top of everyone else in the state.

This got me to thinking about people like me whose parents aren’t of the same ethnicity. When I do think about it, I self-identify as Hispanic, though I will point out that my mom is of non-Hispanic Polish-Italian ancestry whenever the subject comes up. A lot of it has to do with how I grew up. I didn’t speak English until I was three, we lived closer to our dad’s family than our mom’s family, and my dad was always instilling a sense of Hispanic pride in us when we were kids. Anyone else self-identify with one parent’s ethnicity over the other?

One of the road construction crew guys who has been working in front of my house for the last five months finally got up the nerve to talk to me. This morning, after my workout, I asked him where was the best place to park my car given the big earth mover in front of the house.
Me: ¿Dónde puedo poner mi coche?
Him: Puedo mover el tractor. Espere un momentito.
He called someone from down the block to move the earth mover.
Me: No, no. Está bien. Puedo ponerlo en el otro lado de la calle.
I parked my car across the street and then went into my house to shower, change and play with the dogs.
An hour or so later, I emerged from my house, dressed for work. He came up to me as I was getting into the car.
Him: ¿Habla usted español?
Me: Un porquito. Puedo entender mejor.
He blushed and shuffled.
Him: Usted es muy bonita.
Me: ¡Muchas gracias!
I drove off ridiculously pleased that a construction worker told me that I was pretty. I must be desperate.

Los Lobos was interviewed on NPR today about their new album The Ride, and their 30 year history together. I’ve seen them in concert countless times, from small clubs to medium clubs to Indian casinos in the middle of New Mexico to ACL last year. I love them, in part because they all look like my cousins. It is possible that I started singing along when they gave a small performance of Volver, Volver.
The Norwegian/Swedish thing can be very, very divisive. You need to play out an almost perfect balance to avoid insult and offense. However, lutefisk provides a compelling reason to lean a bit Swedish.

See! That's why it was such a cute thing. He was so formal about it all. It was the second thing that struck me, after I did a "someone thinks I'm pretty" mental happy dance. His approach was much, much better than the aggressive tree trimmer guy two years ago who called me at work to ask me out.
I'll keep you posted if/when he switches. I suspect it will be never.

Interesting. I am Hispanic (father only) and Jewish (both parents); however, I don't think I identified more with one than the other. When I was elementary-school age, we lived nearer my maternal grandparents, and I was very close with them. In middle school, we moved nearer my paternal grandparents, and my maternal grandparents died within five years of our moving, so after that, I became much closer with the hispanic part. But growing up, I was never made to feel that I was any different from the (very whitebread) kids I grew up with; I never felt different either. If others treated me differently, I didn't notice it.
[Deleting identifiable information about meself (I'm listening to SpongeBob right now).]
Maybe there is discrimination in places that I don't see, but I do think he's too quick to think someone is treating him differently because of his last name.
Then again, I have an hispanic last name too, and I don't feel discriminated against, but I don't have an accent.
Whatever. This post is too long (and probably too revealing) already. I'm going to delete most of it later once I think about it, I bet.

The short marriage of my parents was the temporary attempted union of a Michigan family and an Ohio State family; there are some black sheep in both families that went to Michigan State.
For reasons that my paternal grandmother can't fathom, I somehow grew up favoring (but not really embracing) Ohio State. So when it came time to choose, I went a third (or actually, fourth, I guess) way.
There's a family moratorium on athletic apparel as gifts, and that seems to keep the peace for 362 days a year. Game days are just assumed to be bad news.
(And Los Lobos rock)
