Well, only a day early.

How did more than one person not pick him?
How could I have dropped him from my list this year? I guess I thought he'd linger in ill health longer.

I think it is fair to predict I will not be a repeat Angel of Death.

Peter Jennings

NEW YORK - Peter Jennings, the chief ABC News anchorman for more than 20 years, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will begin outpatient treatment next week, the network said Tuesday.

Jennings, 66, has been feeling ill for the past several months and was replaced Saturday on coverage of the pope’s death by anchor Charles Woodruff.

So, if you've been feeling ill for several months - you just ignore it and hope it will go away?

It's not rational, but a lot of people do that. (See, e.g., a number of my relatives.) I think for a lot of people, particularly people as intelligent as Peter Jennings, they know the truth, but don't want to face it yet, because that knowledge (or confirmation) changes everything for the worse. You become a sick person, rather than just yourself.

That's sad news. Peter Jennings is my favorite network news anchor. Maybe it's because he's Canadian and says "hoose" for "house."

Rainier Beer Wins ANA/AICP "Battle Of The Brands"
Posted: February 17, 2005
BEVERLY HILLS, CA,- In a surprise ending, Seattle's Rainier Brewing Company bested its larger opponents and took home the Grand Prize for its Remember Rainier campaign for Rainier Beer, at the ANA/AICP Battle of the Brands competition, which took place here Wednesday. The first-ever collaboration between the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP), the Battle of the Brands was designed to reward marketers and their creative colleagues for the successful use of entertainment properties in their brand marketing programs.

Not as big of news as, say, Terri Shiavo's death but...

I had him on there but then replaced him with the President of Pakistan. It just felt like bad karma to put The Pope on the death pool. Unless it involved money of course.

Aw, c'mon -- you're not saying you want him to die -- just that you think he will! In that sense, it's probably better karmically than if there were money on it. If there were money on it, you'd be more likely to wish his demise (jus'a'lil'bit).

Oh now now. We all like to win. Someone croaks that is on our list: it's not neutral. It's partly, "cool, he croaked before midnite December 31, 2005, which means I scored one on my list." We gloat a bit. Part of us is happy he croaked within the time we said he would and didn't last a second longer than the time period for the pool. Too confusing for me. Hence, my picking people like Soupy Sales and such. That guy is not going to come back to haunt MY conscious, let me tell you.

(At least I hope not.)

Riddle Me This!

BURBANK, Calif. - Actor Frank Gorshin, the impressionist with 100 faces best known for his Emmy-nominated role as The Riddler on the old "Batman" television series, has died. He was 72.

Gorshin's wife of 48 years, Christina, was at his side when he died Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, his agent and longtime friend, Fred Wostbrock, said Wednesday.

"He put up a valiant fight with lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia," Mrs. Gorshin said in a statement.

Despite dozens of television and movie credits, Gorshin will be forever remembered for his role as The Riddler, Adam West's villainous foil in the question mark-pocked green suit and bowler hat on "Batman" from 1966-69.
