The inner Maryland suburbs of DC -- at least Montgomery County have smoking bans in place (DC itself has passed one -- or been trying to -- I think). In both my current office building and the past one, smokers have to go outside to light up.

But if you want to see smokers, go to the Midwest. Chicago (as TM noted) and even more so smaller cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati make DC look positively smoke-free.

Combined with a state-law ban on local ordinances (generally applicable). Arlington County would do the same thing as DC and MD. And they'd actually enforce it, like NYC apparently has (our mayors are no Giuliani and Bloomberg--indeed, even the ban has an exception for crack smoking).

I only threw in NVa because Ty's blog link above was a Northern Virginia person saying that people smoke more in NY (all the more reason to disagree with his hypothesis, I know). My recent experience was all in the District.

The Mounds, Almond Joy, Kit Kats, Tootsie products and 50% of the Reeses products (the white chocoloate stuff and the "fast break" whatever the hell that is...) are gone!

The choice Reeses candies and a few Tootsie pops somehow managed to go undistributed.

Someone was handing out the miniature Reese's peanut-butter cups last night. My three y.o. calls them "pie," and thinks they're the shiznit.

You should try Vietnamese food. Start with a nice Pho on a cold day when you are feeling a little run down. You'll love it. I swear. You need to try it.
