What about Jamaica is not overseas?
a) it's an island in an ocean, hence a flight is "overseas".
b) it's a sovereign nation.
Or does TM really mean "nowhere near cheese-eating surrender monkeys or SARS carriers"?

GWNC: How is this pronounced properly? Or was "you" referring specifically to TM?

Ahhhh.... Hot Fucking Tuna. Good band. Yes, Jourma is a damn fine picker. Forgot about them - I'll have to dust off some of their shit and give it a spin...
Thjanks for the reminder...

Dude...you forgot the Tuna??? Heresy. One of my five favorite bands
[of my current 15]
Just picked up Jorma's most recent "Blue Country Heart". All acoustic blues and bluegrass recorded in Nashville on vintage instruments. Think "Old and In the Way" meets Robert Johnson.

If this is the same as Porto Aventuras (same location, so I think it is), I would agree. We did that place, and felt like we were stuck in a colony of really old, incredibly rich Mexican and American white-hairs. So, we around traveled in our rental Bug, and saw tons of incredible old Mayan(?) ruins, swam in the cenotes, ate heavenly seafood, and swam in gorgeous, crystal-clear bays and lagoons. I would stay elsewhere, though. (The kids kept asking why the old people took more naps than they did.)

Kimberly Caldwell goes home.
I have to say, she really started to grow on me the past few weeks. She's a real trouper and I hope she does well in the future. Singing with a band, perhaps.
Carmen, the princess of suckitude, is still there for another week to punish us.
Yay.

Nice one. But that's the thing about Herb Caen*. First, he was from Sacramento, not San Francisco. Second, while he clearly thought that San Francisco was the best city in the world, he was an ambassador for the city, not an apologist for the tireless provincialism of The City.
You know, The Chronicle is an awful newspaper with great columnists.
*For those who don't know, Herb Caen was a legendary columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He wrote a daily column that was sort of gossip column/mash note to SF. When you have some time, go here: Chronicle Website's Page on Herb Caen

I've picked a bad day to have to ketchup, but this last bit of Paigow heresy is worse than Carmen's complexion. To paraphrase Jimmy Kimmel, if you don't like Coldplay (and Radiohead, and Wilco, and White Stripes, and the Strokes, and the Flaming Lips and . . . ) then YOU ARE OLD.

Vacations

1. Banff - I recall that you do not know how to pronounce this word, but anyway... Very scenic - beautiful place.
2. Montreal - lots of fun and many laid back people. A good place to drink a lot. Old Montreal is quite pretty. If you make any attempt to speak French you will be loved. Quebec City is also very nice. Stay at the Chateau Frontenac. Old Quebec is very charming.
3. Vancouver and area. Good rock-climbing
4. Newfoundland. Crazy fucked up unemployed people who like to drink a lot of something called screech. Very bizarre place and lots of fun. Not a place many people vacation there, but it is interesting.
5. Nova Scotia. Very beautiful and fun if you are into hiking, canoeing kayaking etc.
|
I've heard tell about a NYCer who took a vacation in Newfoundland and was treated like a celebrity the whole time.
Seriously, Canada gives you great bang for your vacation buck. Great golf all over both coasts, and Lake Louise, Alberta is supposedly every bit as pretty as that famous picture (I think it's of a Fairmont hotel).

Coldplay is a bad Radiohead cover band.
Wilco? "Summer Teeth" sucked. I don't care that their last CD was shunned by their label - and now Tweedy is an artiste
and has a fucking attitude problem. But what do I know - I preferred the Son Volt/Jay Farrar side of Uncle Tupelo.
The White Stripes/Strokes are the Liz Phair/Urge Overkill of these 15 minutes. Stripes peaked on "White Blood Cells" as is evident by this barely mediocre "Elephant" and the Strokes are already falling apart [according to NY tabloids]
Flaming Lips - I totally dig their schtick and appreciate their appeal but they just don't do it for me. I heard their show with Beck was the balls.
Let me add this:
the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's - no no god fucking no
the Music - remind me not to buy a CD on a Rolling Stone rec
the Raveonettes - no idea, but I'm guessing from all the positive press that they suck.

Hockeytown in Flames
Not to sound like a bitter NY Rangers fan -
but as a bitter NY Rangers [season ticket holder], I don't mind seeing the OTHER, OVERPRICED, ALL-STAR TEAM get knocked out in Four. But for Stevie Y - one of the classiest, most underrated and best players in the League. I hope he doesn't retire.
And I stand by the Rangers decision to sign Richter over CuJo - even though he got hurt and didn't play this season. In this day and age, you don't get many sports heroes that play their whole career with one team. In local baseball - we had Donnie Baseball. Hopefully, the Yanks will do the same with Bernie. And like Richter, I hope we have the class to the same with Leetch.
I will be proud when they retire #35 - the greatest goalie in Rangers history - next year.
Right now - I'm rooting for the Leafs, Canucks and Ducks.

Yes, its Curling with a stick instead of a broom. Just because your team now loses in Dallas and a bunch of scabs play in your town, don't get all hissy.

That's an easy criticism, but it's wrong. Every British guy with a falsetto is not trying to be Thom Yorke. A Rush of Blood to the Head was a tremendous artistic jump for Coldplay. Besides, Radiohead doesn't even want to be Radiohead anymore, they'd rather be Aphex Twin.

You're half right. The Strokes are setting themselves up for an Urge Overkill style destruction. They were only ever hype, but The White Stripes have released four albums that range from good to great (and Elephant is great). Besides, I don't think Jack White is going to get pregnant and leave the music business.

No, Junior. Please give me a history lesson. ![Stick Out Tongue](http://www.lawtalkers.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif) By the way, sometimes it is helpful to read the full string before posting. As with so many other things in life, context is important.
Oh, and Led Zeppelin's first album came out when?
And related to the Jorma Kaukonen posts. Jorma is now living in a rather remote area of Southern Ohio. He moved there to follow a (guess what) woman he fell in love with. The photo to that album cover looks rather familiar and was probably taken at one of the cabins in the compound he built on some land he purchased there.
I read an article within the last few years in a local paper about him. Apparently during the summer, he holds clinics where he teaches both guitar techniques and songwriting skills. Seems like a pretty cool gig, but I don't remember any of the details on how to sign up. Frankly, I wish I did at this point. It would be something to learn from one of the masters.
