Let me ask everyone this: Why do we continue to hear about the Yankees' payroll?

Didn't major league baseball just decide limited revenue sharing was the way to go? (And when I say "limited," I mean, charge the Yankees for being successful by taxing them on the amount they spend over the "acceptable" payroll amount as agreed on by every non-Yankee club.) The Yankees paid the penalty this year to all the other teams in the league. Those teams pocketed that cash instead of investing it in their teams. I think it's fun to listen to rabid capitalists talk about how unfair it is for the Yankees to be able to outspend everyone else and demand money from them to even things up. What?

And where were the complaints when Steinbrenner spent like a prostitute in a "bebe" shirt shop back in the 80s? No one gave a shit then when he bought Jack Clark to deliver a pennant and we fell flat on our faces because we had no pitching. The only reason people are pissed now is because the Yankees are successful.

Of course more money buys better talent. But that ain't the only reason the Yankees are the Yankees. In the 80s we couldn't sign the best players even though we had the cash. We had to build a team that could compete. Showalter constructed the team that started the dynasty and then every player wanted to play in New York all of a sudden.

Post season wins increase revenue. Steinbrenner is committed to winning. He's an ass, but he cares about this team. He wants the cash brought in by the 57,000 fans at the stadium last night. He uses it to keep the dynasty going.

And don't weep for the Boston fans. They had the Celtics and you didn't hear a peep from them about how unfair that dynasty was.

No breeze whatsoever at the stadium. Not a good sign for a knuckleballer.

God, I hate to say this.

But the 7th game gave me a lot of respect for this team. Torre RAN the game, made moves that mattered, and they behaved like a team. The Sox were playing well and on the verge of a break out, but they shut them down and then built their own offense, taking the opportunities when they came. I don't think payroll is what separated these teams in the end.

I will speak more nicely about the Yankees for the next two weeks.

After that, though, my undying hatred for them will resume.

It's a mini-monopoly. Not really a capitalist notion.

So many violations of the Sherman and Clayton Acts...oh wait...

No argument here.

There is a South Wacker, though there's hardly an Andersen anymore.

Wacker Drive is kind of L-shaped where the L is tipped forward. As a result there is a N-S leg and an E-W leg. And an Upper and Lower Wacker on each leg. Causes a great deal of confusion to out-of-towners.

Be happy to have you, Paigow. Nobody visits us here lately...

The Sport's Guy has it right: the only difference b/w the two teams was that one had a good manager and the other had Grady Little.

I agree.

Red Sox fans are good at losing. And for all Grady Littles' faults, you've got to hand to to Torre. He managed every angle, and there were no toddlers among the Yankees last night. Unlike many past Red Sox chokes, that was a game the Yankees won, not one the Red Sox lost.
Agreed. And that was the most gracious thing I've ever heard come out of a Bosox fan. (And that applies to when they're talking about the Yanks or their own team.)

Not many. SayHelloForMe and mmm3587(?) maybe, as they occasionally contribute to the local board. Others didn't make the move over here...

1) The luxury tax is a joke, whether or not the yankees pay it. The problem is not with the luxury tax, it's with the great disparity in the ability of teams to buy the best players, which continues despite the tax. But, yez, the sox can't really complain about that, because they have the second highest payroll. The remaining 28 teams can legitimately gripe, though, which means pretty much everyone is griping. But you heard bellyaching about it in the 80s too--when Winfield was signed for the outrageous sum of $8m for 5 years (or whatever), it cast the same pall over everyone else. Problem was, the Yankees didn't win, so folks could laugh at them for spending and still losing. the criticism is a wee bit more effective when they're actually winning.

2) As for the capitalists griping -- kind of a misplaced criticism. Sports generally rely on some equality on the playing field. Why does every major league sport in the US have a draft? The idea is to maintain some competitive balance. One of the appealing things about the NFL is that either team can win in every game (except those involving the Bengals or Cardinals). Get too far away from that goal and the sport becomes uninteresting to fans.

3) And, bitch, please, there was plenty of griping about the celtics when they were winning, the lakers now, and the yankees then and now. And, no, never from those cities. But what was the "unfairness" of the celtics' winning streak? That they got bob cousy and john havlicek in the regional draft? It certainly wasn't free agency. Same with the yankees pre-free agency. The hatred wasn't from unfairness, it was because they always won. Sports are different now: money, rather than cunning and luck, has become the principle driver of success. Is that a positive development?

I think Wonk should offer the room to me. I have been nothing but nice to him and he actually had the audacity to suggest that I should work for my paycheck! How rude and condescending!

You are SO missing the point of my posts. I’m not trying to amuse but just to join in the discussion, although if I am amusing I guess that’s a bonus, as I have read that people like funny people and respond to funny. So LOL, if I’m funny . Even TaxWonk, who I guess doesn’t get out to see celebrities with his wife and all that!! Hey WonkSter, leave the little rugrats at home for a night already, LOL!!!! I don’t have kids, at least none that I know of, but I’m sure if the SO and I did that deed:td:-LOL-we would use a babysitter, I mean we would be parents, not dead!!! LOL!!!
