Insane in the Blaine

You have to admire the Brits for both there creativity and tenacity. I would hope that some jackhole starving himself in a box in the US would go largely unnoticed. The Brits have taken it upon themselves to really make this Blaine's life hell. Uncontent with efforts thus far - which include pelting the box with eggs and golf balls, laser pointers, and all manner of loud noises - some bloke filled balloons with paint and launched them at Blaine's box with a catapult.

From the article:

[Pat Prince, the director of Network Security] said that this morning's attacker broke into a derelict building at the rear of the car park behind the Blaine site. Leaning out of a window, he fired seven or eight shots at the illusionist before hitting the box.

Mr Prince added: "One of our officers who was patrolling in the area heard the twang of a catapult being fired and went to investigate. We detained the man and the police then arrested him.

"The frustrating thing is that once again this man was smartly dressed and well-spoken. You would think that middle-class, middle-aged people would know better.

That, too, would be a justifiable expression of one's political views. However, it won't happen because, frankly, almost no one actually gives a shit. Apparently millions of people care enough about rounding up and executing telemarketers to exercise their speech rights.

NB, I have absolutely no rationality about this, at all. I think these fuckers are a public menace. I would probably applaud the repeal the first amendment w/r/t/ commercial speech entirely if it would get these assholes off my line. I think a lot of other people would, too. That scares the fuck out of me. I think that "constitution isn't a death pact" thing might apply: in applying a no-content-discrimination rule in this case, they court complete and total disaster with the backlash.

I'm surprised some enterprising answering machine company hasn't invented one of those systems that are such a pain in the ass to get through when you're trying to call a company for any other reason besides buying whatever product they're selling, for use by individuals.

"Hello. You've reached the house of ThurgreedMarshall. If you are a friend or relative, please enter the restricted access code now and the phone will ring directly through. If you are a stranger, but are not selling anything, please press 1 and leave a message. If you are selling something, please press 2 and follow the detailed instructions. And be sure to listen closely to all options, as our system has recently changed. If you are a creditor, please press 3. If you are paigow, please hold and someone will be with you in eight hundred and sixty seven minutes."

I want one of those.

Until they pass a law that is guaranteed to stop the telemarketing madness, I highly recommend that people call up their local phone company and subscribe to anonymous call rejection. For pennies a day, you get complete privacy. The ONLY telemarketer I've ever had call me with anonymous call reject active was from the local paper, and I knew who it was because they had to release their caller ID info to get through. We moved just recently and didn't have the service for a couple weeks and got dozens of calls. I had forgotten how annoying it is.

I hate the thought that I have to PAY to only receive calls from my friends and family, but it's completely worth it.

Favorite Jessica Simpson moment

[They laugh at her]

Nick: Haven't you ever wondered why buffalo don't have wings?

Jessica: I've never thought about it...
FB discussion has inspired an eonline analysis of some of Ms. Simpson choicier quotes. I am surprised the buffalo wings bit did not make the cut.

"I hate record labels. They think they know everything. I want to hear them try to sing it."

The Situation: A tearful Jessica learns that her record label has found fault with the vocals on her new single and that she must go back to the studio and rerecord said vocals.

The Profound Lesson: After learning that the label found the music of this wee blonde popster "too bluesy" and "too challenging" for most fans, we are inclined to agree with her assessment of the intelligence of the recording-industry types she deals with. Too bluesy? Man, they are stupid.

telemarketers

I joined the state do not call list and generally no one bugs me. I don't answer the phone at home anyway, unless I'm expecting a call at a specific time. That's why caller ID and voicemail was invented. If they leave a message and I want to talk to them, I'll call them back. I don't answer the door unless I'm expecting someone either. I just wait until they go away. It reduces a lot of aggravation.

I have no problem with anyone exercising their rights. I have huge problems with lawyers jumping in bed with stupid pols to trumpet "fifty million people can't be wrong". In matters of conlaw, well, yes they can.

You better hope that public opinion doesn't someday focus on ridding the world of tasteful shoes, 'cuz you just ratified your own closet death.

I was going to consider signing up for this, until my local phone company called me SIX FUCKING TIMES IN ONE DAY last weekend to try and sell it to me!! (I found out what they wanted after picking up on the sixth time.) After that, they should consider themselves lucky they are still my phone company.

Obviously, they don't appreciate that this isn't the best way to market a service to stop annoying phone calls...

Holy crap! Robert Palmer R.I.P.

He had some good stuff, especially in the 70's and early 80's. Even his 80's stuff (including the Power Station) was better than a lot of the dreck that came out then...

Always seemed like a classy guy and a snappy dresser... Tried to bring the crooner image into rock.

Too bad, obviously he had much more than just a bad case of lovin' you...

I don't see the First Amendment fuss over this issue. If I don't want to talk to someone who wants to talk to me, I have an equivalent First Amendment right to tell them to screw off. That's all the do not call list does, but without my wasting my time.

I actually had a homeless guy try to pull this crap on me once when he asked me if he could ask me a question (which was going to be for cash to support his heroin habit, judging by the fresh tracks on his arms) and I politely said no, I'd rather he didn't and kept going. He then followed me arguing he had a constitutional right to talk to me against my will. Apparently in his fogged world free speech only applies to pains in the asses asking for drug money and not to those uninterested in donating.

Same position as telemarketers. Unbelievable.

We have a state do not call list and I am on that. However I have not had much trouble with telemarketers anyway. Not since I got an unlisted number, something I have had since 1998. I resent the fact I have to pay to have my number NOT put in the phone book, but it's worth it.

Not if they are pissed off enough, and politically motivated enough, to pressure their pols into an amendment. Such are the wonders of our system. That is exactly the thing that would worry me about this (if I didn't think there was a strong likelihood that the 10th circuit will overturn - as per Politics, I agree with you that the decision is hinkey). Enough people have been pissed off for years to make the possibility of a serious backlash, with the possiblity of some real collateral damage, possible if not likely. Harrassing judges by phone is nothing. Millions of pissed off consumers strongly backing a constitutional amendment stripping all protection from commercial speech should scare the pants off of you.
