It would have cleared any messages you had at that time so anything someone sent you say 5 minutes after the time you asked me to clear it, you would have.

This is probably just a difference between the CPSC and NHTSA, because I don't see NHTSA recalling all motorcycles for identical reasons.

You're right. NHTSA wouldn't recall all motorcycles for the identical reasons because you don't abruptly fall off a motorcycle when it runs out of gas.

The best way to describe the difference in the stability of a segway and a motorcycle is to compare balancing a ruler upright on the palm on your hand vs. rolling a coin across your desk.

The segway remains upright because it is basically the classical inverted pendulum problem from feedback/control theory, which is what you're doing when you're trying to balance a ruler upright on the palm of your hand -- you're constanly adjusting the position of your hand in what is basically an iterative error correction loop. If the loop ever stops, the ruler simply falls over.

In contrast, a motorcycle remains upright due to a combination of gyroscopic and centripetal/centrifugal forces that keep you from falling over as long as you're moving. When you run out of gas, you don't abruptly fall over -- rather, there is sufficient momentum to keep you upright so that you can apply the brakes and come to a safe stop.

I'll try to remember to remind you on Monday. Last night was the first I caught of it, but here's a mini summary of what I could keep straight (I have issues with who goes with whom on this show, b/c I never remember their names) --

-- One guy has a madonna/whore complex so his GF was shocked (shocked!) to find out that he is saying totally dirty things to his island date. All the time. "He's never talked to me like that! He's always been a perfect gentleman! I feel like that is a different person!"

-- Another girl is pissed because they showed footage of her guy with another woman on a hammock and the GF thinks that it shows that he has real feelings for this other person.

-- As far as I could tell, none of the guys were overly upset with the videos they saw at the end of the show.

Edited. Grammar.

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about the PB.

As for the actual physics involved, thanks. I now have incomprehensible words to use in place of "a computer keeps it upright."

This does not seem to diminish the "duh" factor behind "If it runs out of power, it will no longer stand upright." I do recognize that the CPSC exists to save people from their own stupidity, a monumental folly that NHTSA has never undertaken.

god's eyes

So I went to dinner with a friend this week and we were discussing some growing up thing (hey, much sangria had been consumed, so sue me if I don't remember anymore what it was). Anyway she started talking about God's Eyes. I said "what?" And she looked at me like I just emerged from under a rock. So, I ask you all, did you make these things when you were growing up -- http://www.caron-net.com/kidfiles/kidsapr.html?

If so, what did you do with them once they were made? In other words, WTF.

Wrong. It's a long vacation to a sunny beach with soft sand, golden sun, cool sea, a pitcher of margaritas and a bevy of cabana boys just waiting to do your bidding.

You made 'em in camp when the arts 'n' crafts counselor got tired of plastic lanyards or macrame, then you gave 'em to your Mom who said thanks then hung them someplace obscure and not easily noticed in the kitchen, on the porch, or best of all, back in your room.

Yes, made them as a child at hippie summer camp and possibly in school. I guess my parents did with them what they did with all of the arts and crafts stuff my sibling and I brought home -- admired it and then tossed it or stuck it in a box and then tossed it later.

I made millions of these. I gave them away. I think my mom still has some in her keepsake drawer along with notes about giving my dad head.*

*Which is why I will never, ever, snoop around my parents things ever again.

Yes.

No idea. Probably gave them to my parents who put them in a box with all the other fabulous shit I made at day camp.

Are you less cynical than I am, or do you have nicer parents? I guess it could be both and there could be some kind of cause/effect relationship.
