Speaking of obscure music--I need help! Back in the late 80s a friend of mine gave me a mix tape with a punk version of Doris Day's "Que Sera, Sera"--the tape faded, I've looked all over the web, and can't find it (found a nifty Sly and the Family Stone version but naturally, not nearly what I was looking for).
Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking about? Can anyone help? Eternal gratitude.

Wilco? "Summer Teeth" sucked. I don't care that their last CD was shunned by their label - and now Tweedy is an artiste
and has a fucking attitude problem. But what do I know - I preferred the Son Volt/Jay Farrar side of Uncle Tupelo.
The White Stripes/Strokes are the Liz Phair/Urge Overkill of these 15 minutes. Stripes peaked on "White Blood Cells" as is evident by this barely mediocre "Elephant" and the Strokes are already falling apart [according to NY tabloids]
Flaming Lips - I totally dig their schtick and appreciate their appeal but they just don't do it for me. I heard their show with Beck was the balls.
Let me add this:
the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's - no no god fucking no
the Music - remind me not to buy a CD on a Rolling Stone rec
the Raveonettes - no idea, but I'm guessing from all the positive press that they suck.

Coldplay is catchy crap. Their current song in heavy roatation is the best use of one repetitive note since Neil Youn'g solo on Down By the River. The only difference being, Down by the River is a classic, while Coldplay's CD will fill the $5.99 bargain CD bins in a year.
Summer Teeth is another attempt to mimic the aural landsacpe of Pet Sounds. It doesn't work, but Shot in the Arm is a damn good tune. Its a nice warm up for Yankee Foxtrot. Tweedy is a self righteous idiot. He sounds as foolish as the guy from Radiohead did after OK Computer was rated as the greatest record since Robert Johnson laid down tracks.
Elephant is a great fucking record - miles better than White Blood Cells. Get your ears out of your ass. You Have No Faith in Medicine is the best perfect 3 minute punk single since Smells Like Teen Spirit. Oh, and like Tweedy, Jack White is an idiot. Luckily, he's self-deprecating and admits he knows nothing about politics or the much of the world outside blues and rock music -- so he remains likeable.
The Strokes are a one album wonder gimic. You can't make a career out of playing the same song 12 times on every one of your records. Don't feel bad for them - most of their folks ae music and film executives. Why do you think they get to fuck fat Hollywood trash like Drew Barrymore and get all those GQ layouts? Im surprised Dominic Dunne hasn't linked them to a murder yet. The Strokes are yesterday's product.
It bears reminding that the Lip are 20 years old and according to most have already done their best work. That said, Yoshimi is a perfectly entertaining half-concept record. Its great because the production is fantastic and it doesn't get caiught up in some childish self-important message to society like OK Computer. The most potentially creative bands of our time have been lost to the pretentious belief that they had to make a statement to society - U2, Rage and Radiohead as prime examples. Rage has put out fiour musically fantastic records, yet all of De La Rocha's lyrics combined don't have the force of 30 seconds of
Dylan's "Hurricane" or "Masters of War." Its a hell of a thing to wrote a damn fine protest song - folks like Bono, Strummer, De La Rocha, the Radiohead singer and Springsteen aren't qualified and shouldn't try.

I am sad and tired today. You need to get direct TV. Nothing like a good Don Cherry rant to make you feel back home.

I gave up after OT2. I was pleased to see the result this morning. OT1 and OT2 were some of the funnest hockey I've seen in a while. Great series.

Why would you say that? I've actually been to Sedona and thought it was beautiful. Went up to that church in the rocks. Played golf on the Sedona course, finishing right around sunset. Fantastic. Great drives, incredible red rock. Why wouldn't I enjoy it? I even went shopping and bought one of my cooler office toys there from one of the many little artsy shops. It's more of a day trip spot than a vacation destination, but I liked it.
Now antiquing doesn't sound fun at all.
I also disagree with the poster who said Crater Lake in Oregon was no fun. I went in the winter and the winding road up the mountain was cut through the snow such that there were 20 foot walls on either side. Amazing. As for the Crater Lake itself, it is absolutely beautiful. We got there relatively early and the clouds hadn't burned off yet, so it looked like a huge bowl of steamy soup. But once the clouds were gone, it really was a sight to see.
And speaking of amazing vacations, the best one I took was when I and some friends rafted down the Colorado, through the Grand Canyon. Camped for 5 days and helicoptered out. Amazing hikes. Awesome rapids. And a natural water/mudslide. Can't beat it. Highly recommended family trip. We had the hottest mormon mom on our trip with tasty breasticles she liked to display, so if you could arrange for her to join you, she'll make the trip that much better.

Seriously, Canada gives you great bang for your vacation buck. Great golf all over both coasts, and Lake Louise, Alberta is supposedly every bit as pretty as that famous picture (I think it's of a Fairmont hotel).

Ever been to Prince Edward Island? I have family who have a house there, but every time I look at the map, I say "fuck that... too fucking cold"... Should I reconsider?

In the summer PEI is not cold. When we ran out of money we started to vacation there instead of Nantucket. Really pleasant temperature actually, nice beaches, and great golf. Of course you have to get over the whole "Anne of Green Gables" bullshit that assaults you at every turn.

Jorma/ Fur Peace Ranch

And related to the Jorma Kaukonen posts. Jorma is now living in a rather remote area of Southern Ohio. He moved there to follow a (guess what) woman he fell in love with. The photo to that album cover looks rather familiar and was probably taken at one of the cabins in the compound he built on some land he purchased there.
I read an article within the last few years in a local paper about him. Apparently during the summer, he holds clinics where he teaches both guitar techniques and songwriting skills. Seems like a pretty cool gig, but I don't remember any of the details on how to sign up. Frankly, I wish I did at this point. It would be something to learn from one of the masters.

It's called the Fur Peace Ranch and you can read about it here

Besides, Radiohead doesn't even want to be Radiohead anymore, they'd rather be Aphex Twin.

This is quite possibly the most interesting perception about Radiohead I've heard in a while. Hmmm. You really have a good point.

...but The White Stripes have released four albums that range from good to great (and Elephant is great). Besides, I don't think Jack White is going to get pregnant and leave the music business.

Liz has been back for some time. And she also has 4cds out - ranging from good to great - which was sort of my point.

Great. Now I'm going to have to go back and reread these too?
"Coming next is their adaptation of the classic fantasy series by C. S. Lewis, "The Chronicles of Narnia," beginning with a $100 million production of 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.'"

See, now this whole overtime thing gets me anxious, particularly w/r/t the Leafs. My concern is that the Leafs are going to play every series into 7 games, every game into overtime, players will be overextended and get injured, and the team will be exhausted and spent before (or even if) they make it to the finals and go out on a sucky, loserish note. And, wait, I think we've seen this movie before ... yes, yes we have!
Oh, and Slave, if you are even marginally rooting for the Ducks, you have lost your play-off TV priviledges at our place. The Mr. will beat you with a stick if he hears that.

Reality TV Show Protest
Coal miners on rampage against producers of "The Real Beverly Hillbillies":
http://news.findlaw.com/ap_stories/e...154502_03.html
I see their point, but honestly, is there a difference in demeaning portrayals between this upcoming show and the Lawn Guylanders/Staten Islanders shoved into a mansion with contemptuous servants to backstab for a million bucks on "The Family"? (Except for the different-but-equally-atrocious accents?)
