I can understand why DC, like Texas, Atlanta, and other cities where it doesn't snow a lot, doesn't have the resources to keep as many plows on call. But when Maryland and Virginia get their roads plowed pretty well and pretty quickly, it can only be attributed to mismanagement.*

* Sweet and Sour** story: In a more recent "blizzard"--about 18" in 2004--some roads were bone dry within 12 hours. That was sweet. Others didn't see a plow for nearly a week. Yet the plows were still driving up and down those bone dry roads. That was sour!

Golden Globes, Green Pastures

Well, this IS the fashionable board, isn't it?

Actually being home, and therefore catching some of the red carpet, I have to say the dresses were a lot better, and not quite so dreadfully boring/conservative, as recent Oscars. Best dress of the evening goes to Helen Mirren, who looked TOTALLY HOT. All these Hollywood bitches getting their jowls and boobs hiked up to their ears should take a look at what REALLY makes for a super-attractive, sexy woman over 40:

She actually showed cleavage, which was not plastic and gravity defying, and you know what? It looked pretty damn good. Also, I want that necklace for my next birthday present. Someone tell the Mr.

Other than that, I have no comment on any of it. Other than to observe that Tom Hanks and Warren Beaty are profoundly not funny (except for Beatty's crack about asking Arnold to become a Dem and Arnold obliging, which was pretty good). Hugh Laurie is now appears to be the only sexy man in the entire entertainment industry.

Belated happy MLK day. Turner classic movies did a marathon of movies considered "black" movies for one reason or another in honor, and I caught a good part of a 1936 flick called Green Pastures I'd never even heard of before. Basically, it's the entire bible (in speedy fashion - Moses went from turning his staff into a snake to killing all first borns to getting his people let go all in one 2 minute audience with Pharoh) done by an entirely black cast. It was excellent, and kind of weird. I mean, you can tell that practically every black actor in Hollywood at the time was like "you mean I don't play a maid? I'm in!", but you still have these weird stereotypical characterizations showing up. And a lot of it gave the appearance of having a real budget, but anything that would have involved any special effects happened off-screen (I mean, I understand not parting the red sea, but how hard would it have been to knock over some blocks to show the destruction of the walls of Jericho?). Still, acting and directing were superb all around (probably a lot of why it looked like it had a real budget), and, of course, it had one of the best images for MLK day - Moses, having taken his people through the wastelands and to the edge of the promised land, is permitted to get within sight of it but not cross over with them himself. The image of the Israelites saying goodbye to him as they went on was probably a better statement of the holiday than any of the memorial services. Anyhow, a highly recommended movie.

I have only two thoughts about the Golden Globes.

1. Ali Lartner appeared to have her dress on backwards.

2. Jennifer Love Hewitt needs to fire her stylist. She has a gorgeous figure, and lately, every time she appears in public, she looks like a pear-shaped, suburban homemaker all dressed up for the local PTA fundraiser.

Oh, one more thing...

Angelina Jolie is absolutely gorgeous. But I hated her dress.

I missed the globes, but have seen the pictures. I thought Angelina and Jennifer Garner looked pretty good. Considering I don't really care for either one of them.
Didn't like Cameron Diaz, Nicollete or this chick from Babel.

1. The dress itself is nice, but maybe on another person. Or the straps are too long.

2. 2.

3. I didn't love the dress, I didn't hate it.

4. Beyonce. I don't know. Looks like the same dress she's worn before. Like she's trying too hard.

I though Dias's dress was OK - it was different, and not a disaster, which itself is sort of an accomplishment. Nicollete Sheridan is consistently one of the worst dressed women in the world, for good reason. Her closet must be like a Dynasty 'shroom flashback or something.

But, yeah, that Babel chick - WTF? I only saw that one at the table at the end and ... damn.

For those posters in LA, what is LA lake on the nights of the Awards shows?

Do they close off certain areas? Are those areas even near any of the law firms? Is it palpably different the nights of big awards shows?

In certain pictures, that Ali Lartner chick looks old. some of those actresses are not as attractive as they should be. Beyonce--that dress is not flattering makes her look very hippy.

As for Courtney Cox is Dirt canceled yet? when will the riding on the coattails of Friends end?

As an aside, why is LiLo with Joe Francis? Is he not ugly? he's heinous. And girls gone wild? such a klassy joint.

I haven't seen the video but the article on the sidebar doesn't say anything about exhaustion. It says she had audio from one station but her responses went to a different station.

Good series of pictures, if anyone wants a gander.

Hilary Swank seemed to be the only person to pull off Chanel this time out - all the tulle sort of annoys me. Funny, 'cause usually I think Hilary Swank looks like crap, even though I try to like some of her stuff for being interesting. I also didn't think Sienna Miller worked. I really wanted to like it, but ... no. Too much, I think, with both the hair and the dress. Too much going on. Not sure what I think about Marchessa overall - last season's humongo fabric flowers were sort of cool, and JLo's dress was actually pretty good, but overall they don't work for me as something someone would actually wear.

You should watch the video.

She was exhausted. This was at the end of three days of press (interviews and appearances), and she has had cameras following her around for a reality TV show, too,” said Ballard, referring to a new documentary series about the star’s life.

“She was sitting in a room with just a camera and a mic on, and the controllers dropped the sound twice, which is why she rolled her eyes.”

‘She was a little tired’
Ballard said Abdul, 44, had canceled all media interviews Friday because she had a sore throat after sitting in the chilly studio Thursday.

“She never drinks. I have known Paula Abdul since she was 13, and I have never seen her drink ever in my life. ... And no, she is not on any kind of medication,” he said. “She was a little tired.”

She and her publicist should get their stories straight.

I thought that Catherine Heigl managed to pull of tulle, but then I have a crush on her and am predisposed to like whatever she wears.

Though looking at it again, it's less tulle-y than I thought.

Best dresses (besides Helen Mirren's):

Jennifer Lopez

Vanessa Williams

What's up with Chloe Sevigny - she looks like my 60 year old Aunt:

I am so sorry Vanessa's dress is horrid.

Chloe is just fugly. No amount of avant garde fashion can distract from that.

Was there a point in time when she was considered attractive (by hollywood standards)? And why even then?

I do, too. She's adorable. Even when she's forced to utter really stupid dialogue.
