What's your secret food of shame?

I'm not really ashamed for liking Cheetos Crunchits. Or scooping Nutella from a jar with a big spoon while on calls (I keep a jar at my desk).
Now if I were to eat Whiskas or Fancy Feast on the sly, I'd be ashamed.

I know some poor people that eat generic cat food and who would be proud to have it known they eat Fancy Feast.

I don't eat fast food or processed bag snacks (except for Pirate Bootie, but that's an occupational requirement); however back in the day, when I was a lad in college, Nutella could only be purchased in Europe. I had a friend who travelled to the continent once or twice a semester and would pick some up for me. We served it at Friday Happy Hours, on real baguettes from the french patisserie with a nice Cru Beaujolais (not the Nouveau plonk). However, once the stuff came to America, I gave it up. I stick with artisanal chocolate now.

My puppy eats the neighbours' cat food that they put out for the feral cat colony that lives in the nearby forest. I don't know the brand.

People are crazy
The downtown "farmers' market" has opened for the season. If they limited it to stuff grown within a limited area (as they do in St. Paul), it would be mostly limited to meats, cheeses, honey, baked goods/sweets, greenhouse grown starter plants and hydroponic greenhouse tomatoes.
But there are several large vendors of fruits and vegetables. Why would people buy bananas, grapes, mangos, etc. from someone on the sidewalk rather than from a grocery store with a good produce section?
But I'm keeping my eyes open to see if the morel season will be early this year due to the warm weather. And I'm going to plan ahead how to saute and freeze some -- they didn't last long enough last year.

I only buy produce from the Pike Market, which is open year round. they do a better job getting quality produce than safeway or albertsons et al. Also, I don't like to suppourt those greedy corporate giants. ymmv.

A. They think they can get it cheaper, or
B. They think it's "greener" somehow, or
C. They probably don't think about it that much.

I buy from both. The co-op I buy from gets their stuff from organic farms nationally and locally. The Mexican market has produce I can't get a lot of other places, and it's cheap, cheap, cheap. The Midtown Farmers market is exclusively local produce. I don't think the quality differs too much from the Kroger, HEB, Central Market or Whole Foods, but the prices can be considerably different. Certainly, I'm not guaranteed any particular produce at the more market-y places, but usually the food is ridiculously fresh there.

When I was a kid we went to Italy (the parental homeland), and we all fell in love with Nutella. We convinced our mom to buy a ton of the stuff to bring it back home -- it wasn't available in the US at the time.
After we got home, we tried it, and none of us liked it. Not at all. We decided it was because that was really the only sweet, other than ice cream, that we got while in Italy, while in the US the roost was ruled by confections like the blessed Snickers bar, which was completely unavailable and almost unheard of in Italy (especially in the small town where we primarily stayed).

I should have said why would someone in Minnesota buy fruits that don't grow within 1,000 miles of here from a person who sells them on the sidewalk once a week.
I expect the product you get in coastal Texas in April is vastly different but the non-local stuff doesn't look to be better quality and is certainly not fresher than the local grocery chains.
On the other hand, I love buying from the growers at the farmers market when the seasonal stuff comes in. Super fresh, typically good quality. I just don't buy bananas, grapes and mangoes from them.

I'm pretty sure year-round availability to bountiful organic and non-organic fruits and veggies is part of the California Constitution. I think it's after the section where you also promise 45% of gross income to paying property taxes.

Back in the day, when I would get my Euro deliveries of the stuff I fell in lust with it. It's over now. No snickers neither, no offence.
