I've read the Times religiously for 15 years. In the past decade the oped page has gone from being left leaning to unabashed partisan. Somebody please tell Paul "The World is Ending" Krugman to take a fucking xanax and go get a George Bush dartboard if he hates W so much. His rambling tirades at W - no matter that they are sometimes partly correct - gives new meaning to beating a dead horse. To correct for Krugman's idiocy, Safire has become more and more right each day, fancying himself the lone conservative in the Sulzberger liberal resort. If they keep up this annoying shit and don't find a good moderate, I may cancel my subscription. But where would I go? The Washington Post sucks and the Wall St Journal oped page looks like it was written by Rush Limbaugh channeling the spirit of Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. What the fuck? We need a liberatarian popluist newspaper, but I guess that wouldn't sell well, since making reasoned articulate points is way above Middle America's head. Eh, whatever... another reason to board the mothership for Mars.

I was hoping for something a little more inspired, more scathing. But this was good. Subtle

This is incredible. Why do people continue to say shit like this?
Are they calling it a rape club? No. It's like saying having gay boy scout leaders will increase the number of gay boys.
And is there such a thing as a constructive fire?

Uh, yeah. You mean, it's the one minority of which you're a member.

He lives in Boston and writes about sports. 'Nuff said.

I think you'd confuse the piss out of a black guy if you called him tan.
Plus, if you use that term, what would you call the guidos who hit the tanning booth? And what would Robert Evans do?

I've skimmed, I admit, and may be even more confused than usual, but didn't she say her husband is black?

You're talking about a guy who probably believes in Pentecost, the Rapture, and Hell. So, yes, to him there is such a thing as a constructive fire.

This isn't peculiar in a place where most people aren't white. It makes perfect sense. If most people are white where you are and you have black blood, you are black. If most people are black where you are and you have white blood why wouldn't you be considered white? I think this is the case in a number of places where white people don't make the rules.

Sheesh - I didn't mean to start a ruckus (but it is interesting). I only used colored in my original response because that is the term that was used in the post I was responding to.
Spoke to the SO about this last night. Black doesn't bother him. Colored doesn't bother him (then again he is from an Island).
Black does bother me. It may have been acceptable to the vast majority of people during my lifetime, but in my family it was not a nice word. Maybe it was the attitude with which it was uttered.

But this does bring up an element of the black people and their ability to swim debate that was ignored yesterday. I agree with all who mentioned the poverty link to the inability to swim (as in duh). But I will add that for many suburban white kids of my generation much of the point of summer swimming season was to fry our skin and become as tan as possible (hello, baby oil). My black friends in high school (yes there were some suburban black kids) lacked this goal, in fact preferring not to get any darker. Fry-your-ass county park, with its 5 swimming pools, was not frequented by those kids.
Maybe the advent of better sunscreen and the increased fear of skin cancer will change this disparity. Or maybe teenage white kids will continue to burn themselves in spite of the dangers for generations to come. Who knows.

If you really are committed to forgiving and forgetting, why are you spending time and energy on figuring out ways to express your nonforgiveness and inability to forget? It seems counterproductive. Well, counterproductive only if your real goal is forgiving/forgetting.

This will not be helpful to burglars. The Times just made this part up to flesh out the article.
