I love that response. I may steal it from you as a motto or slogan or avatar or whatever you call those option-thingies.

You have obviously been spending too much time with the clam chowder bunch. You need to come to where Thai food under 3 star is considered bland.

I guess I deserved that, but your interpretation of what I said makes me want to puke.

Trust me, there isn't enough alchohol to make me want to go there.

Which reminds me of a game I used to play first year with the other GA's at my old firm:

Death or Partner X? Then we'd name the least bangable partner we could think of (and believe me it was quite a contest for most disgusting partner at that place) and take a shot and wait for the truth. The partner I was assigned to got the most "death" votes of anyone.

Did everybody do this?

Well, in defense of Annie, that might not be true. Here in Podunkville there's a pretty strong and growing sentiment that "black" is not acceptable, and that one must use "African American" instead. I have had people correct me. Even when I was talking about a dude from some St. Somewhere island that wasn't part of the good old US of A. By the way, I never did get an answer from the African American as appropriate term person as to what to call a person from, say, Haiti.

The irony is that "black" used to be considered almost as bad as the n-word (at least according to some pre-WWII history books I have read). My saintly yet racist grandfather was a cop in a machine-run Northern city in that era, and "black bastard" was the preferred racial epithet used by him. Meanwhile, polite society used "colored" (see e.g. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), and then "Negro" (as in the United Negro College Fund) before "black" was adopted. I could be wrong, but I think that it was Elijah Mohammed and the Black Muslims who first started using "black" and it was quite controversial.*

*My God. I am become like Atticus, only not as smart and funny. Ack!
Its all about the fucking context. If you're wearing a police uniform, chewing a toothpick and swinging a baton and drawling, "Hey, lookie over there at them black folks" it a bit different than me or you standing arounf the water cooler gossiping, saying "Hey, you know Bill, the guy in accounting, short black guy... Well guess what? He hit the lottery last week..."

What part of "don't condone" is confusing. I refuse to overlook the cheating.

I am incredibly polite to the adultress married to my friend. I was even incredibly polite to my father's girlfriend when we would encounter each other at events to which he did not take my mother.

That said, I refuse to invite them as my guests or to be anything other than polite strangers. That is the form of censure I choose.

Send a letter. Emails are ignored by networks. Letters represent like 1000 pissed off viewers in their minds.

Photos are helpful to get a sense, however superficial, of the people you're about to meet. It can be misleading, though, if the attorney uses the image as a vehicle not for what is, but for what em wants to be. For example, up until I met him IRL, I expected Penske to be a dead ringer for Etta James.

I like photos because it helps me put name to face. I'm terrible with names, and it's nice to be able to go back to the website and figure out who was who at the meeting.

Being incredibly polite is quite different from asking a large group of people how to do a modern version of "the cut direct." And then to say your goal is forgiving and forgetting. You are (a) being polite and (b) not making any bones about the fact that you have neither forgiven nor forgotten.

Edited to say I wish I'd used the phrase "is a far cry from" in there. Damn.

I totally disagree. (1) You don't have a constitutional right to friendliness; (2) You do have a right to determine your acceptance others' private behavior, and (3) Refusing to be cordial is not a verbal assault.

It's fascinating to me that the side of the board that would be generally anti-hypocrisy and sees etiquette as essentially hypocritical in nature (that is, everyone but me and DS) is saying that one should fake a feeling of bonhomie that isn't felt --- why, because it's wrong to judge others?

Yes, we called it "F--k or die," but I prefer the version I've played: present two vile possibilities for banging with death as the out. It's a different dynamic when you introduce the comparative aspect, and it's often very telling when a person will explain why they chose one person over another. It's also fun to see who in your group is capable of the most evil pairings that almost always motivate the player to choose death.

Some people will go to extraordinary lengths to try to convince people that they are not racists. I am not saying that Anne Elk married him just to prove to her white liberal friends that she is not a racist, but I would not put it past her.

I think that faking a feeling of bonhomie is a far cry from giving the cut direct. Or a modern version of it, which would have to be considerably less subtle to get through to people today. Plus the whole "forgive and forget" thing which is not something you and DS usually say you have as a major aim in life.
