I am incredibly polite to the adultress married to my friend. I was even incredibly polite to my father's girlfriend when we would encounter each other at events to which he did not take my mother.
That said, I refuse to invite them as my guests or to be anything other than polite strangers. That is the form of censure I choose.

W/r/t/ the Fugee "forgive & forget & still cut" thing - There is a vast difference between spiritual forgiveness and social forgiveness. One can forgive a thief his sins without wanting to mix socially with people who make a practice of theft. I see no conflict here. "I love you in Christ but will not introduce you to my friends and family" is a perfectly sensible middle ground.
W/r/t "minding your own business," yes, it is always very rude to notice of other people's sexual practices (most usually evidenced in commentary on people being "entitled" to wear white at their weddings). If those people impose that knowledge upon you through confession or demonstration, or if, through scandal, court papers etc. it becomes public knowledge, then reacting to that knowledge is not rudely sticking one's nose in.

His rambling tirades at W - no matter that they are sometimes partly correct - gives new meaning to beating a dead horse.
We need a liberatarian popluist newspaper, but I guess that wouldn't sell well, since making reasoned articulate points is way above Middle America's head. Eh, whatever... another reason to board the mothership for Mars.

Comet Hale Bopp is a very unusual type of comet with a very unusual orbit, and it has been found possible to discover what appear to be very clear traces of it throughout our distant past. Historical records suggest that it typically has taken about 3600 years to complete its orbit, though this interval has varied at different times.
You'll have to keep those Nikes for awhile. But please feel free to create a libertarian populist newspaper - you may have a larger audience than you think.

Actually, write personal letters to every company that you'd like to comp you. In college, I was in a marketing class where the prof required to us to write to a company that had "let us down" service-wise or product-wise in the past. Most people wrote to hotels, restaurants, etc. I think 2/3 of the class received some kind of comp from the company. Many received a night's stay in a hotel, or a gift certificate to the restaurant, etc.
The moral is: personal letters are effective*
*And will get you free shit.

I think we are in agreement. In fact, I think you just said the exact same thing I did. I thought you were saying we have a duty to let everyone who has done something socially abhorrent know that we know that they did said thing and that we think they should burn in hell for it.

It's a different dynamic when you introduce the comparative aspect, and it's often very telling when a person will explain why they chose one person over another. It's also fun to see who in your group is capable of the most evil pairings that almost always motivate the player to choose death.

First year, we had a game called "If all the male shareholders in the Litigation group were thrown into prison, who would be the first to get raped?" Personality traits that made some of the partners tools, like coming on as a tough guy were seen as potentially backfiring in prison. Chubby-cute was another factor that moved one of them to the top in my list.

It's fascinating to me that the side of the board that would be generally anti-hypocrisy and sees etiquette as essentially hypocritical in nature (that is, everyone but me and DS) is saying that one should fake a feeling of bonhomie that isn't felt --- why, because it's wrong to judge others?
|
1. Refusing to be cordial is the polite equivalent of a verbal assault.
2. Is it really that big of a deal to fake a smile and "Nice to see you?" We only do that, what, 10, 20 times every day of our lives?
3. Ettiquette is being a hypocrite, but we're all hypocrites. You're advocating behaving like Holden Caulfield, which you can bet your farm I'd fucking love to do every goddamn day. The problem with "letting people hav it" politely is that it'll come back and bite you in the ass... just like dicking opposing counsel on a extension or some other lowlife behavior.

Every day, I get "Debt reduction the Christian way", "Enlarge your assets the Christian way" ("assets" because my firm's system blocks the word penis), "Christian Mortgages!" or something like that, and yes, Christian singles groups. It's the new hip spam (at least new to me).

I find it baffling that you take such offense to my Chariots of Fire post. It wasn't even intended to be insulting. For someone who has a history of being flameproof, you're awfully sensitive here. Why is that?

Well, if you wish to cast this as an epiphany of some sort, knock yourself out. I will note that this epiphany sounds a lot like earlier ones, though. I still vote thinskinned.

Sad proof of the limitations of the Internet. Those on this board who know me will testify that I bear an uncanny resemblance to Michael J. Fox, down to the persistent cough.
Of course, they'll also testifty that when I'm drunk, the facade falls away and I look more like Drew Carey. So, half a point for you.

When Socking Goes Horribly Wrong...
Has this been discussed here?
Apparently, our favorite career suicide practitioner who shall remain nameless (initials = PT), spent some time in a Mexico City jail recently after being arrested for shoplifting socks, of all things... And somehow managed to get in a Village Voice article about it.
http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0335/guthrie.php
(See about 2/3 of the way down)
So PT is a fugitive from Mexican justice? That looks good on the old resume... The CA bar might be interested as well...
Watch out for those socks, Penske. No good can come from them...

But . . . but . . . you're being incredibly JUDGMENTAL!! You can't do that! You can't have morals that differ from other peoples' morals! It's . . . it's . . . insulting, and . . . you might make some people think that if they do something bad, someone else might think badly of them! And that's just . . . so . . . uninclusive, or discriminatory, or something!

I wrote a very moving and eloquent letter to the manufacturer of my car after a particularly disturbing incident at the car dealership that services it (under warranty, free oil changes, etc.) involving an incorrectly installed oil filter that slipped and resulted in the oil draining out of my car while I was driving it. They sent me a beautiful magazine full of optional crap with their logo on it and a $100 gift certificate with which to purchase said crap. I really would have preferred that they install a brand new engine in my car. I haven't decided yet whether I want the ball cap or the pen and pencil set.

Yes, I know someone who has spent much of their life in South Africa. Simply can't understand what someone is saying when they talk about "minorities". It has led to surreal conversations. (Though note that part of this is because combining "oppressed" and "minority" is counterintuitive to him -- "privileged" seems to go better in his world).
