Lands End doesn't make my favorite sheets anymore and they are worn to shreds. They made them out of the same fabric as their pinpoint cotton shirts and the more I washed them, the softer they got.
I was more going for a "spend the big bucks; they're worth it for sheets" message.

Does LL Bean make similar sheets? Or was it just Lands End? I'm a huge fan of Chambers, even though they don't seem to have the sheets I have that I ADORE any longer. I think the pillowcases may have been a bit narrow for (American?) pillows; maybe they discontinued because of that.

I love bedding.

Edited to add that The Company Store has chambray sheets that the describe as "shirting fabric" -- http://www.thecompanystore.com/paren...dept%5Fid=1110

Chambers also has oxford cloth sheeting -- they don't really have online shopping, just that you can view the catalog. Here's what the catalog has to say, and prices:

This 440-thread-count cotton oxford has a silken hand and luminous color, qualities that have made it one of our most popular collections. The flat sheet and cases are bordered with double-needle stitching and the sham with a single-needle stitch. Imported. Taupe, White, Blue or Gray. swatches available

I will happily shop for high-end bedding for anyone. I love love LOVE shopping for bedding. I have had to cut myself off, however, due to a lack of storage space and a realization that I really don't need more than 3 sets of sheets, particularly when one set is the hands-down favorite that I nearly always use. Unfortunately it is not cold enough here to justify flannel or I could have a few sets of those too.

I suppose it would be rude to get relatives in colder climates flannel bedding, in particular in the sizes of the beds I am likely to sleep in, for Christmas. They might pick up on the present being more for me than for them and take it as an insult, to boot. But does that really bother me . . .

Unfortunately is IS cold enough here that flannel is a must until sometime next spring. Winter has descended on the Patch. We got snow this weekend that looks like it will be here for the duration. The high today was 18. At least it was 18 above and not below.

If you were related to me and brought flannel sheets, I wouldn't be insulted. But that's because I haven't gotten around to getting flannel sheets for the Manor guest bed.

I was hoping the unseasonably warm weather would hold out until this weekend. The Manor is hosting 13 for Thanksgiving dinner, 7 of which are children and it would be nice if they could be outside in the afternoon. Now I'll have to hope they flood the hockey rink down the street so the boys can go skate.

NYC question

That I will ask here since that board isn't real lively right now. How hard will it be to cab around town in the evening of the night before Thanksgiving? And will traffic be worse than usual? Are we talking college kids coming home that night wreaking havoc?

Evil Empire

If the Schilling trade goes through, I don't want to hear any crap about how the Yankees can outspend everyone, anymore, from anybody. The simple fact is, we have more money than everyone else, but we are hindered by our own success.

We wanted Schilling. We didn't get him because Arizona wanted Nick Johnson and Alfonso Soriano -- two excellent players (one of whom has flirted with 40/40 two seasons in a row, the other hit over .300 this season and is widely believed to be an excellent young hitter). Boston is giving up Fossum (yeah, who?) and 3 prospects who haven't done a damn thing.

Same thing happened last year with Pittsburgh. We wanted Sauerbeck, Pittsburgh asked for Giambi, Mariano and Clemens. We told them to forget it. Boston wanted Sauerbeck, Pittsburgh asked for some clam chowder and a beer. Boston sent them the chowder, kept the beer and signed Sauerbeck.

Boston is interested in trading Manny Ramirez, one of the highest paid players in baseball for Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in baseball and current MVP. Can't say I blame them for this. But if they pull it off, they will have spent like champs in the offseason.

The thing is, they look like geniuses for making all of these shrewd moves. But they're really just taking advantage of teams not wanting to deal with the Yankees. And we always end up paying above market for the players we do sign (by trade or in free agency). But no one ever takes that into account when they look at our payroll.

So just keep that in mind.

Depends on where you are. The area near Central Park West will be congested with pedestrians. Everyone wanders around watching the parade balloons being inflated and prepped. It's a bit of a carnival atmosphere. They also close part of the Lincoln Tunnel at midnight to bring over the rest of the parade floats, not sure which avenue they use to head uptown. You should be OK if you avoid those areas. When I worked in Manhattan, it was a BIG drinking night out so you will have competition for the cabs.

Media Criticized for Biased Hometown Sports Reporting

ALBANY, NY—Members of the national media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting released a 255-page report Monday criticizing the American media for severely biased local sports coverage.

. . .

Wilborough said that, in an average article about a sports event, 87 percent of column space was devoted to coverage of the local team.

. . .

The FAIR report, which characterized the bias as "irresponsible and pervasive," stated that "the blatant slanting of local sports coverage goes against the ethics of balanced journalism and contributes to a public perception that the local team in a particular area is the absolute best. This does a disservice to the very audience that the media claim to serve."

Mom Finds Out about Blog

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—In a turn of events the 30-year-old characterized as "horrifying," Kevin Widmar announced Tuesday that his mother Lillian has discovered his weblog.

. . .

Upon receipt of the e-mail, Widmar mentally raced through the contents of his blog. He immediately thought of several dozen posts in which he mentioned drinking, drug use, casual sex, and other behavior likely to alarm his mother.

. . .
According to Widmar, there's "no fucking chance" that Lillian will simply give the site a cursory look and never return.

"Mom loves hearing every boring detail of her kids' lives," he said. "She'd want to know what I'm eating for dinner every night, if she could. This blog is like porn for her."

Are you joking? It will be a ghostown in this city by 6:00 o'clock.

I don't recommend buying sheets from LL Bean, as the fitted sheets are too tight, and the sheets are not as soft as they should be for their thread count and length. The fitted sheets are supposed to have a deeper pocket -- but they scooch off the corners of my bed, which is pretty luxurious but not nearly as deep as a pillow top.

The dog beds are great, though.

Well I guess I used to go out to all the wrong places on Thanksgiving Eve.

Garnet Hill makes great sheets, also less-luxe-but-still-nice ones in funky colors/patterns.

Can't beat the LL Bean dog beds. Ours dragged his all over the house to wherever he wanted to nap.

Let me rephrase. Some bars may be jumping. That, I'm not arguing. But there will be plenty of cabs in the city because there will be about 3 million fewer people in the city.

TM

Edited to add: That doesn't bode well for you the next time you come in then, does it?
