I don't mind this phrase. I tolerate thousands of sports/cards/other cliches every day. Probably at least a thousand each minute that I am at work. If I am on a conference call with more than three other lawyers, then the count jumps to several hundred per second. I am just tired of people saying "It is what it is" when they have nothing else to say. If you have nothing to say, then don't say anything.

Are you then objecting to misuse or overuse or both?

My local classic rawk station is still very similar to what it was when I was in high school. Lots of Zep (in fact, every day at some set time that I don't know about, they "get the Led out"), Pink Floyd, the occasional Doors binge, Freebird, etc. However, I have heard them play the Pretenders and U2. Which the local "alternative" station also play.

If nobody said anything when there was nothing to say, billables would go way down. At the end of the day, it is what it is is not necessarily suboptimal.

my daughter likes to tell her friends that I shook Joey Ramone's hand. this was, you know, before what happened.

N.B. I was going to write "before what happened happened," but I was intimidated that someone would find that a meaningless phrase.

Did you even bother to read anything that I wrote? Even one word? I am not objecting to misuse because I do not think the phrase can be misused. I am just saying that the phrase itself means nothing. That is the basis of my objection.

That and a convincing way of saying, "I've seen this a hundred times." I had a boss that used to do that. She was such a liar.

Well, it's normally used to describe something that the speaker believes is unchangeable. "It is what it is" means you can't do anything to change the circumstances. The problem is that the phrase is often used when you can change the circumstances, and the speaker is lazily using it as an excuse to ignore the potential changes.
The problem is that now that everyone says it, it is no longer vaguely profound. Resigning oneself in a ostensibly philosophical manner now is thinking inside the box. As Spanky is my guide, something like this is the best response to the clods who say that.

(spree: sound)

Why do you think she will understand if she reads?

Have you not read a thing I've written? The phrase does not mean nothing. It implies existence. Nothing is the absence of existence. The phrase might be a somewhat meaningless tautology, but it is not nothing.

The ironic thing about him asking if she read his posts, is that she is probably one of the very few people who still do read his posts, or try to figure out what nonsense he might mean with them. he is truly biting one of the few hands that still feeds him. sad.
