And it really wouldn't serve the broader purpose of telling teams not to make up their mind on the basis of the fact that a candidate was in the same fraternity as the owner, or has a similar golf handicap, or got chummy with him at some minstrel show.

The point of the rule is to force teams to "think outside the box." That is, interview people that they wouldn't in their white-blinders way, otherwise look at, because they're not the same, retreaded coaches that constantly resurface with a new team.

THat's why the Lions were punished: they went straight for a coaching retread without any kind of broader consideration of other candidates. That's what the league is trying to discourage.

And attacks on me are fine. but Greedy cubed, I dont think the Pithy Paigowflame Post is easy. Few have done it well. Less has, Thurgreed has, Chevy has, I am sure Slave has at some point, and some socks have done a good job You have never effectively done one. And toprove my point, I will invite anyone to disagree with my contention that you ahve yet to post the pithy paigow attack. THey can cite the post if they want that they think was pithy or even paraphrase it enough so that it will be searchable.

this is a good contest. has greedy had a personal best on me, or is it all a bunch of mediocirty on the Scrollby Highway? Lets let the board decide.

Jerry Jones had no intention of hiring anyone but Bill Parcells during the off season, but he got around the fine by having a courtesy interview with Dennis Green. Green seemed to be on the token interview circuit last year, because the Jaguars also talked to him before hiring their new (white) head coach whose name escapes me.

Frankly, if I were the NFL I'd be more pissed off at the 49ers who strung along Ted Cotrell and Greg Blanche (who, along with Jim Mora, interviewed twice) for awhile before turning around and hiring out Dennis Erickson from the oh-so-successful Seahawks. Erickson said he had no idea he was running for the job four days before he got it.

For the record, Dennis Erickson has no idea about a lot of things.
Like offense, for instance.
Years of alcohol poisoning will do that to you.
Also for the record, Dennis was a Beaver coach when he interviewed - and the Seahawks are doing just fine without his "ability as a coach." See record.
