You're saying that the D-Backs asked the Yankees for the sun and the moon, and when NY said now, they took a couple of asteroids from the Sox. (Or will, if Schilling agrees to an extension, etc.) The question is, did they talk to the Yankees about something less? Just the sun? Just the moon? I just can't believe that they didn't explore other deals. In fact, I find it more plausible that someone working for the Yankees told the media, off the record, that they're not doing a deal for Schilling because Arizona was asking for too much.

It's no secret that AZ wanted Johnson AND Soriano. I believe I read an article before Boston was even mentioned that indicated that Cashman offered either player and some prospects to complete the deal. Arizona refused to budge from their initial demand. I think we can agree that that price is too high for a 38 year old pitcher who won't move without a 3 year contract extension (at $15 mil per). Boston offered Fossum and three prospects and the deal was done quickly*. I haven't heard much about the prospects, but I imagine if they were anything special, I would have.
And why are we setting the Sauerbeck trade aside?
TM
*Still not completely done. I imagine if the Yanks actually wanted to lose Johnson and Soriano, Schilling would jump Boston's ship in a heartbeat.

I question this. The newspaper report is either (a) fictitious, (b) based on a discussion with someone in the Yankees front office, (c) based on a discussion with someone in the D-Backs front office, or (d) based on a discussion with someone else. I suspect (b). Why would Arizona do this, if they could get better than Fossum, Lyon, and the other two prospects? (Incidentally, they're trading Fossum to Milwaukee for Richie Sexson.)

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought the Yankees' non-deal was in the off-season, and the Sox' deal was at the trading deadline.

Is that you, Thrasher Husband? Man, is your wife going to be pissed when she sees that you used her log-in -- it's not a jersey; it's a SWEATER!
In other news, how about that battle between brothers last night, eh? Mano et mano, offense versus defense. Haven't seen anything like it since Phil scored on Tony in 1980. Yeah, Biron scored on Biron. Amazing.
Oh, and The TWINS!*
* This is kind of an amusing way to note, I think, the fact that identical twins Tyki and Ronde Barber played against each other last night in the Monday Night Football game. See, Coors has this stupid, sexist, and creepy-because-of-the-incestuous-implications commercial talking about how great football is with "THE TWINS!" (who are two attractive blondes). So, I kinda thought using that slogan to refer to Tyki and Ronde would be funny. Apropos of nothing, I wonder if E/O would like to be in a Barber sandwich. She has publicly stated her appreciation of defensive backs. Plus, there's the whole brown sugar/once Hugo Black thing. But, would the incest angle squick you out, E/O?

Uh...that's kind of my whole point. But if I can't rely on anything I hear in the media to draw conclusions on what looks like an irrational act, we might as well not discuss sports at all.

No. I think it was during the season, relatively close to the trading deadline. The reason why it was such a big deal was because Cashman came out after Boston got Sauerbeck (and some other Pirates players) that he didn't understand why the Pirates were completely shutting him out. There was supposed to be a big race for Sauerbeck between Boston and New York because he was the last decent arm available. Turned out it wasn't a race at all and Steinbrenner was pissed.
Now it could be that all these owners just hate Steinbrenner. That's certainly conceivable. In fact, Colangelo might just be paying Steinbrenner back for signing Wells even though Wells had an "oral agreement" to play for the DBacks in 2002.
Whatever. It's not really worth the argument anymore. I just wanted you to keep it in mind.

You got me...wink wink..nudge...nudge. Actually, the Thrashers are calling it a jersey (I am speechless). I suppose I have to let go of "sweater" --
Biron v Biron was exciting. Good job for Mathieu but I don't agree with some commentary stating that he "schooled" Marty -- it was sort of a lucky shot.

I promise you that I will keep it in mind, if you will promise me to take with a grain of NaCl any story about how the rest of the league is being irrationally mean to the Yankees which appears to be sourced to the Yankees front office.

Oh, I was just funnin', based upon one of your recent posts about giving your husband a hard time about calling it a jersey. But you knew that.
I'm starting to hear it called a jersey more and more on TV -- even by guys on ESPN, and it's too bad in a way. I would never mock someone for calling it a jersey or anything, but one of the things that I like about hockey is its unique traditions. So I like "sweater." And the whole take the Cup for a day thing.

I don't know that I'd call it a lucky shot, but it wasn't what I would call a schooling, either. It was a pretty goal, though --Mathieu was able to get the puck up, and there wasn't much his brother could do about it.

Don't get me wrong -- nice shot, but still a bit lucky. Marty should have had it coming across the crease before little Matty even got a chance.

Yeah, but can I blast my enemies by pressing on my wrists with a flourish? On either hand?
Speaking of which, where's the chatter about Sealab's definitive opus, Splittsville, the greatest cartoon episode of all time since South Park took on Bennifer.
Choice lines:
"[How do I look?] Like a steak covered in slut sauce."
"I am the beer bandito."
"If you ever need anyone to talk to, or to dry hump [whap] I'm here for you."
"Hesh is old school. Hesh kicks the crap out of that school."
"Please god, just don't strike me blind. [Lightning] Ahhhh, I'm blind!"
I could go on, and on, and on.

This was one of my favorite stories/short films growing up.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...?v=glance&st=*
kind of more relevant if you are part of the whole Leafs/Canadiens rivalry, but still an excellent little story.
And how about that game the other night? The highlights actually made me tear up. Esp on Sportscenter when they cut in Roger Doucet singing. fuck. I'm such a sap.
And in my great 3 year old tradition of seeing a hockey game on Thanksgiving weekend, I'm going to the leafs/rangers on Sunday. So once again Thrasher and I are almost kindred spirits.

They made you read that at [GWNC's school down the street from str8's school?] too? I guess it was mandatory, Ontario and Quebec wide. The whole writing to Monseiur Eaton thing cracked me up (it was Eaton's, wasn't it?).
Funnily enough, my step-mother's neice is an Eaton-wife. Kinda like a Stepford wife, but much less efficient. Her wedding was the biggest I've ever been to, by far. 700+ guests. Horse drawn carriages. Ceremony in church bearing the name of groom's grandfather, etc.

Warning: Pay the Fat Hooker!
"A MAN was found dead in a hotel with his hands bound behind his back, a rubber hose around the neck and three stab wounds in the chest. [he was also nude and gagged]"
"From the manner in which the body was found, police have not ruled out the possibility that the victim and the woman indulged in ‘kinky sex’ before he was murdered."
I don't know what would make them think sex would be involved.
Of course, if this were SVU they would find out that really he was murdered for some totally non-sexually-related thing and the murderer set it up to look like a kinky-sex, prostitute-involving killing to throw the cops off the scent.

I can't watch Law & Order or SVU anymore because I am always looking for the twist in every episode. In order to keep me interested, there should be occassional shows where there is no twist at all. Like a bodega store owner in spanish harlem who is shot by a black kid from regular harlem. After discovering that the kid was a heroin junkie and exploring the links between a possible drug war between the columbian cocaine cartel and the asian heroin gangs and black drug dealers, they discover that the bodega owner wasn't working 80 hours a week there as part of some international money laundering operation--and he wasn't even columbian. And the 16 year old heroin junkie from harlem wasn't a crip (or blood) trying to forge an alliance between his gang and the Japanese Mafia, he was just trying to get money for a fix.* Although having no plot twist is such a sophisticated plot twist that most of their viewers might not understand it.
*fix is Starsky and Hutch slang for using drugs...or repairing something that is broken.
