I could see something a year ago, with no explanation for the change, but 1975? You think that is a flip flop?
I would be concerned if anyone didn't have inconsistencies in the things they said over such a spread of time.
I have no doubt I said things 15 years ago that would make me shake my head in disgust at myself now.

It would not be better for democracy if every politician were locked into the position he or she initially took on an issue, however long ago.

No in general, if it's principled. I just think Kerry (and other pols) make decisions based purely on political grounds, so when they do they should be called on it and asked what has changed since 72 or 75 that made you change your mind. Ask Bush that question, and the answer is easy - 9/11. Ask Kerry and it's also easy - he's pandering.

Kerry statements from the 70's are meaningless, other than to put his "military record" in perspective.
his flip flops over the past few years on matters of responding to threats are very important, and the public recognizes this. November is over- try and get some senate seats, okay?

That is sooooo not relevant to any discussion of abortion. What the hell are you thinking???
LOL. But I'm still crossing the street to get away from you -- that hamburger flipper you are wielding is a scary weapon.

Funny. Bush's stance on tax cuts seems the same whether it's pre-9/11 or post-9/11. Pre-deficit or post-deficit. Sometimes I wish he wasn't so principled.

So whether or not he is opposed to abortion depends on what the S.Ct. says?

Opposed to abortion and pro-choice are not incompatible. Nobody's running on a "More Abortions" platform.

Well, it did shift the terms of debate somewhat. Even the GOP now believes that regulation of abortion is a federal issue.

It does? I'm not all that current on the issue, but this is news to me.

fair enough - though in Kerry's case I see this along the same lines as "I voted for the war, but am really against it."

Didn't we already cover self-selection bias in the NYT editorial?
