The scene: Two days after Christmas, in a French bistro in the Rice University Village. Close to the end of a nice lunch.
The actors: Most of my immediate family and balt.
The discussion: My sister's natural hair color, which hasn't been seen since circa 1999. It's currently jet-black, though it's had stints with red streaks.
Dad: So dark brown like RT's or darker, like [RT's brother's]?
Sister: I don't know. Probably [RT's brother's]. Look at the roots, I'm sure there are some there?
Dad: Hmmm. I can't tell. It's dark, but not black. Why black?
Sister: I don't know. It's been a long time.
A waiter leans over to grab the signed credit card receipt.
Dad: Well, what color are your pubes?
A waiter quickly retreats.
RT: That poor, poor waiter. I hope you tipped him well.
The poor waiter had to come back to ask for another signature, since the original didn't go through. He wouldn't look at any of us in the face.
And damnit, I liked that restaurant. What's an approrpiate time to wait for waitstaff turnover?

Reggie Bush Bowl
Because they can't even manage to lose a game properly, the Texans barely lost the Reggie Bush Bowl in San Francisco on Sunday in overtime. It was a nail biter, especially for those of us who had to keep track of the score on the internet. Why, Fox, why did you switch over to the already over Washington/Eagles game, when you had an overtime game in the race for last place going on? *ahem*
Anyhow, my question is this: Do you all think that winning the Heisman trophy is an indicator of greatness in the NFL? I have helpfully attached (of course the table formatting is fucked up) a list of the Heisman trophy winners since 1980.
It seems to me that past performance is not an indicator of future success for quarterbacks, but the receivers and backs are solidly good. With a few exceptions both ways.
(Bonus question: Woodson still a better pick than Manning?)
So should we hold on to our hard-earned draft choice (assuming he decides to go to the NFL this year instead of running back to USC now that he knows he's likely to end up in Houston), or are we better off shopping the pick around?

Don't get me started on Ron Dayne. Let's just say that the Wisconsin fan in my household really played up his talents prior to his arrival post-draft-day in NY.
Thunder and Lightning indeed.

Bwaaaack-a-bwack-a-bwack. I bet you don't even make all those bets you claim to make. You probably don't really have a desk, either.

Most years, I'd say trade down, get some line help, etc. But not this year. Bush is something else; you don't want to be the team that passes on him. Coming from the city that passed on MJ, believe me, you don't want to be that team.

Less than a week for that waiter, who is a total pussy. Your Dad sounds funny as hell. How's his ratio? He's not so old that he wears Brylcream or anything, right?

1) CBS had the rights to the game, since the Texans are AFC, and on the road. So Fox couldn't switch.
2) Other than Testaverde and Flutie (jury's still out on Palmer) is seems like a Heisman QB is destined to fail, which isn't totally surprising given that QBs in college often punish mediocre teams and are rewarded for gaudy statistics, rather than tough victories.

Damn. It's been 25 minutes. For all you know, Penske's sitting in Str8's office looking through the file, about to extole Str8 for all his great work.
And I'm not sure you, of all people, should be questioning the state of other's furniture.

Hey, RT's from such a city too.
Although the Dream panned out a bit better.
