If that were the universal translation, then I would accept it. But sometimes it means, "It kind of sucks, but there is nothing we can do about it." And sometimes it means, "I don't feel like doing anything about that." And sometimes it means, "I have nothing else to say right now, but think that I should say something." And I am fucking sick and tired of trying to figure out what people actually mean when they say a phrase that, by itself, has no meaning.

"Can you believe that Hank has asked me to print out the production in paper and send it to his house so he can review it over the weekend. I wonder what his wife is going to say when the semi-truck full of paper pulls up. Hah! The client is going to be pissed at that disbursement. $50,000 in TIFFing and printing charges to convert the on-line searchable database that he can access via the internet to paper because "that's the way it's always been done". Idiot."

so serious question. When you start working with someone new. The pattern for me has been "Oh he or she is SO COOL I am so happy to be working with he or she! Yay!" initial honeymoon period; and then it distinigrates from there, you get to know their annoying habits, quirks and personality disorders in detail....and things are NOT what they seem.

So if it the opposite...you get a feeling of dread the big OH NO NOT HE OR SHE PLEASE GOD NO then will it only get better, it won't be as bad as it seems? it can only go up from the subbasement?

I don't care about my client's position. I'm daydreaming about having sex with Sienna Miller when I say it.

Serious answer: I'm always the optimist, "This is going to be great. I'm glad we get to work together on this interesting project.*" You have to learn to manage their habits and quirks. Not much you can do about their personality disorders.

*Even though you are a assjack that treats me like shit, can't manage a project, doesn't understand a thing about technology, much less the general logistics and process of discovery, and will complain to my boss and director if I don't reply to your inane e-mail sent at 2:00 am.

I and my co-minions use it when decisions over which we have no control have been made, and we have to figure out how to make them work in real life. It's sort of like the last stage of grieving (over the bad decision) -- acceptance. Which means we have already gone through "What the fuck? How stupid is that???" and "Surely they couldn't possibly be *that* stupid" and the other stuff. We end up with "Well, it is what it is. Who gets to tell them that because they didn't think about it enough, it's going to cost them $3 million?"
