At the moment. It's home.
And. I hate to rain on the paradee, but I remembered shortly after leaving work that the 14th is the Princess's birthday. No theater. No dinner. No hotel.
But with her turning 15, I can look forward to hours, days, weeks, of her begging for driving lessons, learner's permits, and how soon can she have her own car.
Sorry, Paigow.

They're still too busy trying to whip each other's asses. It's a good thing that A.N. tied the money up in trusts as well as he did. It's a shame he couldn't have done more.
The Pritzkers have turned into living proof of the old adage that no family should be allowed to have money beyond the second generation.

It's been a while since I commonly stayed in hotels in Chicago. Even then, I was rarely on my own dime. I don't even really have a good idea what premium hotel rooms in Chicago go for (maybe $350 or so) for a night. That said, several years ago, my favorite hotels in Chicago were the Park Hyatt, the Four Seasons and the Intercontinental. I get the impression that these places are not that price-competitive, though. If you're traveling on your own dime, I think that the House of Blues hotel and both Ws (both try to be very hip and fun, but the House of Blues does a better job of being a good hotel), while not as high-end as the others, often have specials and deals that can bring them to the $150/night range. But, I really don't know. When I travel for personal stuff these days, I just use the various name your price/get a really good price internet sites and get the cheapest "4 star" hotel I can. That has worked well for me.
As far as drinking, if a high-end club music playing loungue is your cup of tea, either of the W hotel bars is hard to beat. Both are very nice, have extremely attractive waitstaff and are very hip. W City Center has the "Whiskey Blue" and W Lakeshore has the aforementioned "Whiskey Sky." I don't usually go there with friends or people who don't make a lot of money; as I mentioned before, I think the drinks are pretty outrageously priced, even for this capital city of the patch. (And I was serious about the scotch thing; I've received at both of them literally the smallest scotch I have ever been served, anywhere, for any price.) When I go drinking with friends in the loop or nearby, we often end up in the various bars of the various British Isles, near River North: Fado, Celtic Crossings, this other place I can never recall the name of. Thoce places might be a little down-market for the FB crowd. A better upmarket locale would be Pascha, but I haven't been there in several years. It's fun, and hip, without being too over the top, though. Or at least it was.
One thing I dislike about Chicago is the relative dearth of nice, higher-end bars/clubs/lounges that don't take themselves too seriously and attract a down-market crowd trying to look and act like they're somthing they're not. Serious offenders in the taking themselves too seriously and attracting a wannabe crowd: Butterfield 8, Le Passage, Harry's Velvet Room. These places can all be fun, but the days I want to spend $25 for cover and $8 for a watered down rail g & t are behind me. But these places always seem to be packed; somebody's clearly making a fucking killing. There do seem to be a lot of semi-professionals in these places, too. That is, they're not full-time prostitutes, but they are looking hard for a "sugar daddy" relationship and maybe an occasional paying customer. The pros hang at the various hotel bars, including the Ws.

My favorite downtown hotel is the Fairmont, without question. If you can stay up on Michigan Avenue, I would go with either the Four Seasons, or the Tremont.
As for bars, I thend to like the old classics. The bar a Gene & Georgetti's, or the Drake's bar. I also love the Redhead, a great old piano bar. For more clubby places, I prefer a bit downscale and farther North. Metro, Schuba's, or Four Farthings are more where I did my stomping, back when I stomped.

I am devestated someone quoting a math joke as his signature thinks I am unfunny.
What's your idea of a good joke, two fractals walk into a bar?

I've never been to the Raphael. From what I've heard, it's an excellent small, European style hotel, but I couldn't say more.

I'll go on record for saying that the one thing you dislike about Chicago is one of things I like. Give me an older bar with character and I'll be happy.
Pascha? I wouldn't be caught dead in that place. Each to his/her own of course. Of course, I won't go anywhere where the drinks are $8+ and every song is techno. Kill me. Techno does not = hip. Never has, never will. I suppose if you really like to dance, some of these places are probably pretty fun. I'm usually out to get drunk.
If I'm with the guys, a bar with good looking and efficient waitresses is really all I need.
And I think the Park Hyatt (as well as the Four Seasons) is around $450/night now.
