What do you do for a top?

I've always used a big pot, some oil, and a bit of shaking.

Stir instead of shake, and deal with a few missed kernels.

I'm more worried about the corn popping out all over the stove.

But I like my popcorn like Bond likes his martinis.

Then you just need a pot lid big enough to cover your bowl, or aluminum foil.

And the missed kernels I meant were those popping all over the stove. Mess? What mess?

Guessing which creatures in the Star Wars universe would have been delicious.

I went through three pages of comments, and not one suggestion of Chewing Bacca.

Pie

I'm bringing pie to Thanksgiving dinner. One will be a more or less traditional pumpkin pie, another will be a pecan chocolate tart and the other is undecided.

Current options are apple pie, pumpkin mousse or chiffon pie, or a chocolate pie of some sort.

Suggestions and recipes are appreciated. Especially if you claim your mother has a kick ass pumpkin chiffon pie recipe -- Thurgreed, I'm talkin' to you!

If you're doing a traditional pumpkin, don't also do a pumpkin chiffon.

Apple is always good, though I did a solid apple-cranberry pie last year. Pretty sure I got the recipe from Classic Home Desserts.

I have to come up with a good gluten-free dessert. Other days, it's not so hard. But on thanksgiving? Pie really does take the cake.

For gluten free, you need to PM J Fred Muggs. He knows from gluten free.

Otherwise you could do a mousse -- chocolate, pumpkin or other.

Have you googled for gluten free pie crust recipes?

I've tried several. All rank as so-so - so if anyone has one they think rises above so-so, I'd love to hear.

J Fred. Are you listening?

GF Pie Crust Recipe: Go to Whole Foods, buy frozen pie crust from freezer case. Continue about your business.

Alternative 2, for your pecan/choc tart, make a cookie crust out of some kind of GF chocolate wager cookie.

Alternative 3, this crust works, but you'd have to buy specialty flour that you might not use again (whole foods has all of these flours).

Does it have to be a pie? The Pumpkin Pie Bread Pudding with Bourbon Toffee Sauce I made for a friend last year (made with challah, and pumpkin in the custard) was pretty awesome. Pioneer Woman just posted a recipe from her throwdown with Bobby Flay (his, not hers) for Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Spicy Caramel Apple Sauce and Vanilla Bean Crème Anglaise (made with pumpkin bread), and I thought it looked pretty tasty. I made this Chocolate Hazelnut Tart two years ago and liked it lots, though your access to good hazelnuts may be less reliable than mine.

I still haven't tried that Chocolate-Glazed Peanut Butter Tart recipe you sent me years ago--maybe this year I'll finally get around to it!

Potatoes

It seemed that no one in the family had signed up to bring mashed potatoes so I bought a 10 lb bag of red potatoes and then learned my SIL was doing them. So now I have all those potatoes to use up.

I'm going to offer to bring the main course to my friend's house for game night this weekend and am looking for recipes to use up those potatoes -- any suggestions?

Potato pancakes? Roast them as a side dish?
