You know how we all want to think "gee, back in the '50s and '60s, I would never have stood by while people perpetuated those separate but equal Jim Crow laws that treated black folk as second class citizens, 'cause it was obviously wrong, so I'd have been one of the [minority] who stood up and fought for what was right and just and refused to compromise (or let the people whose policies I endorse with my vote compromise) for the sake of short-term convenience and popularity"? Well, we, too, have that opportunity. What are you going to do with it?
|
You forget that change didn't happen overnight. It was gradual and is ongoing. Black people have spent their lives and are currently spending their lives choosing between the lesser of two evils. That's how you effect change in this country. Vote for the lesser evil this time. Vote for an even lesser evil next time. And so on.
Voting for Nader means less rights for homosexuals than if you voted for Kerry, because Bush doesn't give a fuck about homosexuals (among others). And make no mistake, voting for Nader is like voting for Bush. Kerry is the lesser of two evils.
Nader fucked everything up once already. You have the opportunity to tell him with your vote not to do it again. What are you going to do with it?

Fuck that. Every vote he gets just encourages him. If he got .5% of the votes, maybe he wouldn't jump in all the damn time.
Maybe he should limit his candidacy to states where voting for him doesn't matter.

Somebody else is pushing the idea, Arnie was just asked what he thought (and treated to those clips from Demolition Man that I've thought of once or twice since he became the Gubernator). He gave the right answer - "I've got enough on my plate, haven't even thought about it myself, but, yeah, immigrants have done a lot for this country and have been great public servants and it seems like a fair idea to me." He did come up with Kissinger and Albright as examples pretty damn quickly, but it came off as uncontrived.
Russert softballed him, but also clearly really liked him. And Arnie didn't really leave himself open to easy attack - the willingness to say, without excuse "oh, yeah, that was a mistake" does take the wind out of a potential interlocutor's sails. I imagine that next time he's on, though, he'll get some tougher treatment now that he's shown he can basically handle himself. But he did well overall. He looked a bit over-Botoxed, but otherwise fine.

It is great to be idealistic and to want to make a difference. But, idealism without some amount of pragmatism gets us nowhere.
The realities of our system are such that gay people have no choice but to support one of the two major party candidates. Obviously we cannot support Bush. And though we will have a candidate who will talk the separate but equal talk, as disgusting as that is to me, it is still better than the man who talks about amending the Constitution and uses his religious beliefs as an excuse to use the government to discriminate against us.
At best a vote for Nader is a useless vote. In any state in which the vote is close it is not just a useless vote it is a dangerous one for those who would like to see Bush out of office. Nader should get his ego under control and make his point without running for office.
So if you are trying to help me, and believe me I appreciate it, please don't vote for Nader.

Agreed. Nader's only true platform is his ego. He enjoys attention and has found he gets more of it when he's running for president than when he's just yammering on about accurate food labeling. At least the other candidates are honest enough to admit they are politicians.

Speaking of of ego..whatever happened to Ross Perot? is he still alive? His ego flared up and then faded into political oblivion.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to point out that Gore should stay as far away from politics as possible. I wasn't a Dean supporter, but Gore's endorsement was the kiss of death. For such a smart man, Gore is just an idiot.
That is all.

So anyway, speaking of new opportunities for people; last night
I'm at the Pistons/ Orlando game and there was a woman ref. It was kind of neat to see her presence as just being part of the game. She made some tough calls and didn't really get much crap. none of the players seemed to treat her different. anyone know if there is more than one?
and Rashid watch- game 2 no technicals yet.
Oh, and T., Pistons were in control with 15 seconds left, up 2. McGrady comes up to foul Chauncey- and insteads steals the ball- Orlando wins. Fluke.

Stand up and announce to Kerry (and Bush, and Dean, and Edwards) that this issue is sufficiently important that I don't accept their bullshit weasling about it, that I don't accept its being put on a back burner while "more important" things are addressed, and that I fucking expect my leaders to LEAD, even in the face of ignorance and fear among the wider populace. I think the fact that the leaders of (both! Cheney with his "I think the states should regulate marriage as they see fit" wiggle was bad, but shockingly that's better than any Dem candidate has offered) major parties in this country have come out and publicly said that they think discrimination against gays is just fine and dandy is horrific. My acquiessence in that would only make it moreso.
I'm watching MTP and Nader starts off announcing his candidacy and I, like most of you, say "fucking idiot." Then he unambiguously becomes the only candidate with the balls to stand up for equal rights and my relief was nearly physical that at least somewhere in this country is someone with some sense of right and wrong and the will to stand for it. That's not a protest vote, that's my mercifully getting the chance to vote for someone who stands for something I believe in and that I think is of vital importance in this country. Thank god.
BR(but you know me - I don't know who I was voting for but it wasn't Kerry in any event)C
Edited to add - shit, sorry. I had board confusion and actually thought this WAS the PB when I posted the above - my bad, I will cut this shit out immediately. Is anyone planning to get any of the fun-colored shoes everyone is showing for this spring/summer? They are supposed to be all the rage, but I'm just not sure how much use I'll really get out of cadmium yellow pumps.

Oh stop.
No one is spamming the board with political talk. Sometimes the conversation over here floats to politics. Sometimes it floats to sports. Sometimes it centers on fashion. And sex is always in the background.
I doubt this place will devolve into the giant toilet that is the politics board. And people shouldn't be expected to post about sports on the sports board. As long as politics posters don't start coming over here to post crap just for attention, I don't think it's a big deal for people to voice their opinions on something that isn't 100% "on point."
