Livestock in the Office
Just kind of curious. What would y'all do if, after logging in on your computer this morning, you noticed a small mouse running across the floor in your biglaw office. You caught it in a Redweld and took it to the office manager. The OM said, "oh, another one" with no hint of concern and proceeded to act like he was going to take it outside to set it free. I guess I should just be lucky, a client was not in the office.
On a more topical note, how many of the partners you work with bring their dogs to the office (yes at biglaw)? No, I am not talking about officially certified trained assistance dogs.

Plague-carrying rodents: we were told we'd be disciplined if we ate in our offices (rodents suffered no reprimand). I responded by making sure rodent-related injuries were covered by workers' comp and advising staff not to get into hand-to-paw combat with the beasties.
Dogs: none. I'm surprised given the potential liability if Fido decides to go after a disgruntled associate or unpleasant client. However, if they're hiring, I want a job there.

Depends. If the rodent's billing rate was higher than your own, you should leave it be.
If lower than yours, feel free to kill it.

1-2 was fine. DMC/Enemy. No one better.
Big? 1pac and LL as 3-5? No!
I'll give Dre top 10 because his influence as producer is immeasurable.
But!!!
1) there were many slights, but none as much as Kris with the #22 KRS-1 slot. Fuck. His work with BDP, his solo career and his production - he should be top 5 if not top 3. Others were slighted, but Kris was just fucked.
2) Eric and Rakim at 20? You're gotta be kidding
3) the Wu at 12? Bambaatta at 18??? Kane at 35???? Kool Moe Dee at 48??? This is insane. No history
4) Melle Mel. MIA? Forget it - throw out the list.

Is this list posted on VH1.com or was it just a show?

One of the only perks of my former smalllaw office was that the Displaced Dog could come to work with me every now and then. The partners brought in their dogs regularly.

Inconceivable!!
Someone forwarded this picture of yet another protest to me this weekend. If I were to protest, I think that this may be the sign I'd have to carry.

Tough poll.
Biggie is number one. If only he had more time to build up his body of work.
Run DMC is number two. I don't care who came before them. They are the birth of hip hop. All who come after should pay homage.
NWA. I only put them at number three because Cube, Dre and E all came from this group. Dre is responsible for Snoop (who suxass, but was great on Chronic and Doggystyle) and Eminem.
Hard to fill out the rest of my top five. Arguments can be made for Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick, Wu Tang, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, Kurtis Blow, KRS-ONE, EPMD, Tupac, MC Lyte, BDK, Biz Markie, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, PE and Uncle L.
And I just looked at the list. The fact that Will Smith, Ja Rule, Eve and Lil Kim are listed at all makes the list fatally flawed.

It's very funny that a man who reveres Biggie Smalls thinks Snoop "suxass."
My top ten:
Public Enemy
Run-DMC
Tribe
Wu Tang
Rakim
NWA
Tupac
OutKast
EPMD
Beasties
Biggie doesn't make my list because he didn't have the opportunity to build his body of work.
Speaking of hip-hop, the new WB show Platinum is very entertaining. It's a behind-the-scenes look at an independent hip-hop label.

Biz Markie? The man who put out Pickin' Boogers?
The year(s) modern rap came into its own was when Straight Outta Compton, Sex Packets and It Takes a Nation all hit around the same time. Sure, Sex Packets was nonsense, but it was a killer party record and you can hear its influence in later work by Dre.
Of course, around this time, Paul's Boutique came out and showed that sampling, in the right hands, could be a very high form of art.
Yes. The Kings of Rock pretty much invented rap as we know it. All that crap about Sugar Hill Gang and Kurtis Blow is bullshit - Run DMC MADE rap.
Chronic 2001 is another watershed moment. It never ever gets old, no matter how much you spin it.

You'll have to explain why. And then, give me three songs not on Deep Cover, The Chronic or Doggy Style by Snoop that were any fucking good.

Hip-Hop
Queen Latifah should be in the top five at a minimum. Before her--and largely since her--women in hip-hop have largely been either mute gyrating pieces of ass or dopey gyrating pieces of ass a la Lil'Kim.
And I know Salt-n-Pepa made the list but they should've been higher. Long before Lisa Lopes stuck a condom on her glasses, "Let's Talk About Sex" made talking about AIDS and heterosexuals palatable.
Most of the newer hip-hop videos are so misogynist they're like Poison and Van Halen in the 80s so I won't watch or listen, but I do like Eve lately.

Not going to...
...get into rap arguments because it's so subjective. But yez, Biz Markie -- the guy who wrote "Pickin' Boogers" and "Makin' Music With Ya Mouth" and "The Vapors" and "This is Something for the Radio" and "Just a Friend," etc.
