He's not exactly a lightweight:

"R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. is founder and editor in chief of The American Spectator, a political and cultural monthly, which has been published since 1967.

Tyrrell founded The American Spectator (originally called The Alternative) in 1967 after receiving a master of arts in history from Indiana University, from which he also received his bachelor of arts in 1965. In 1979 Time magazine named Tyrrell one of the 50 future leaders of America. In 1978, the U.S. Jaycees chose him as one of their "Ten Outstanding Young Americans" of the year. In 1977, he received the American Institute for Public Service's Award for the "Greatest Public Service Performed by an American 35 Years or Under." The same year, he was presented with the American Eagle Award of the Invest-In-America National Council.

Tyrrell currently serves as a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the United States Naval Academy. He is also a member of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission. "

Either:
NPR did a story this morning about Kerry giving Dole a call after winning Super Tuesday, to get advice about how to handle an 8-month general campaign. (Dole was the only other candidate in recent memory who had wrapped up the primaries so early, faced an incumbent president with more money, and had to think about ways to stay on the front page.) In the interview, Dole recalled that ultimately they decided to take a week off and sit in the sun in Florida, and lamented the fact that Clinton was able to stay in the news every day by personally doing things that an undersecretary would normally handle, like announcing new regulations for children's car seats.

(Maybe we have several months of looking forward to Bush announcing daily captures and/or kills of Taliban and Al Quaeda footsoldiers, who are memorialized on the soon-to-be-announced pinochle deck.)

Or:
Perhaps we can revive the flagging reality-TV concept with a summertime show. I'm thinking "VP Idol" with Kerry, Simon Crowell, and Paula Abdul auditioning everyone from Graham to Edwards to Sharpton to Hillary. Nader can come too, but only if Simon tells him he should stick to issuing alerts on faulty carburetors.

I don't know, as I never really read it, but that would seem a little inconsistent with his treatment of Hilary C today.

I played little league as a kid. I don't remember having to say any kind of pledge before a game. I do remember doing a lot of praying though.
With our pitcher, more often than not, it was less praying, more doing an indian rain dance.

No. But it was the "Bill Clinton knew about Mena, AR airfield as the leading gateway of coke distribution" mag back in 98.

I love the TAS.

I hear Hank won this award in '79 but was stripped of it when it was found that his birth certificate had been doctored.

Did you see the ad at the bottom of the story? I didn't until just now but it kind of explains why he would create this HC for VP story, and why it isn't inconsistent with a prior record of Clinton-bashing:

"Hillary Clinton exposed!
Madame Hillary: The Dark Road to the White House
R. Emmett Tyrrell and Mark Davis reveal in Madame Hillary that not only is Hillary Clinton determined to be President: she has the power, the influence, and the determination to attain that goal."

As a veteran of judging books by their covers, I'd say this sounds fairly critical.

I used to get my hair cut by a former WWII bomber navigator whose only reading material was an anti-Clinton monthly. I thought it was this mag. Slave, I'm talking single issue publisher "All the things that are bad about Bill." It was loony good, like fluffy-style.
Was this AS?

Yeah, I guess that could be considered a fairly strong indicator.

clinton= hurray for boobies!

from the AS summary of the oscars:

Hellcat Susan Sarandon was one of the few women still sporting a Clinton-era loose-breast dress. Her youngish mate, Tim Robbins, who won best supporting actor, did none of his usual Bush bashing in his acceptance remarks, preferring to see his performance in therapeutic terms. Rather meekly he expressed hope that his playing "a victim of abuse and violence" might inspire real victims of such to seek "counseling." At that moment it was easy to regret Alec Baldwin's not winning the prize.

Exactly. I think it also reported extensively on the Broderick allegations. I used to love TAS, but it got boring after Clinton left.

And dude. AS is not the proper nomenclature. "TAS" if you please.

Actually, it got boring when R. Emmett and Vlad and the rest went out hiatus to defend against the allegations that TAS was behind the "right wing conspiracy" and leaked a bunch of docs to DOJ.

For close to 2 years, George Gilder took over the editorials reins and revamped it into a more literary, tech-oriented mag.

That changed about 8-10 months ago with the "We're Back" issue.
