Like any canal phone, they're a bit uncomfortable at first (kinda remind me of those worm things from the Wrath of Khan) but they're absolutely worth it. Also, they can be found for around $120, which is way below their MSRP. PM if you have specific questions.
I just can't see paying that much for earphones, as I feel that I will eventually lose them or sit on them. Sony makes a decent pair that goes slightly into the ear canal, has different size pads that you can change, and fits over each ear. I've found them very good with running and working out, which is always my earphones/headphones high stress test bed. They cost $30 and come with a nice little case that keeps them untangled.

I think that the Apple earphones are extremely uncomfortable, but maybe it's just because I have a small internal ear area.

They're worth every penny, in my view.

I have heard this, and the iPods have had some failure issues, but you're probably going to be fine. The iPod is that much better than other options that you should just take the risk. Buy the extended AppleCare play for $50 or so to get full warranty for two years. If you want to deal with moving music on and off of it, get an iPod shuffle, which is memoery-based instead of drive-based. But I like having all my music accessible on it. I am getting close to filling up my 40G after a few years of copying all my friends CDs when I'm at their places, and it's really fucking cool to have shitloads of music available whenever you want it.

No other player with that capacity is anywhere near as elegant, well-designed and well-thought out.

I had an iPod. It died. So did the replacement. Now I have a Rio Nitrus - smaller capacity, at 1.5 gigs, but I was told it was more shockproof then the iPod, and so far that's proven right. I took a rather spectacular dive off of a rock headwall a few weeks ago - didn't see it through the snowfall - and smashed up everything I was carrying. (Ask me "which digital camera won't work after you break off the lens?") The Nitrus obviously got smacked hard - there's a big groove on one side, and the case appears to have slightly cracked. And it keeps on working.

My iPod has handled jostling and smacking very well. I've dropped it any number of times.

There are some battery life issues, but I've heard that the newer models addressed that. I bought mine almost 2 years ago.

Questions

Is there a name for the kind of collar on a jacket that has nice material (usually striped or colored silk like is often on the inside of the sleeves of nice jackets, it seems) under the collar instead of just low-quality backing fabric? Is it ever appropriate to turn this up when it's cold or raining and you are caught outside or for any other reason?

What the fuck, in three sentences or less and without jargon, is Six Sigma?

This is mostly for str8: A friend tells me that MC Lars' song "Signing Emo" is supposed to be about an actual band and label. Any idea who?

The 6 GB Mini is working great for me on runs (so far)...

My 3G 40GB is also nearing the end of its two year warranty, and the battery life is getting bad. What would the NY Times ethicist' say about gaming the warranty to get a new iPod, either with or without deliberate action to run the battery down a lot before I go in to the Apple Store to have it checked?

Also, Apple's had some major service issues lately, especially with iBooks, but every experience I have ever had with the Genius Bar has been an absolute fucking pleasure. Also, I saw Amanda Peet at the Genius Bar at the store on Michigan Avenue with her iPod. I told her that I thought Igby Goes Down was her best work. She looked awesome in person and I couldn't help but think of her naked in The Whole Nine Yards. Amanda P. was right after MMM 3. on all the Genius Bar monitors.

My wife was tired of jogging while listening to commercials and bad music on her radio headphones, so I bought her an iPod Shuffle this past Generic Winter Gift-Giving Holiday. She loves it. It's like a little flash memory drive that plugs into the USB port -- very light, able to withstand bouncing around, and it sounds great.

They come in two memory sizes. I got the larger one because, well, she's worth it.

Most excellent. Would you mind buying me the smaller one? (I'm not really worth the bigger one.)

I use a shuffle for running working out, etc. and my 4G standard ipod for all other applications. HDD life span is my motivating factor for this choice.
