WASHINGTON - Good news for aging hippies: smoking pot may stave off Alzheimer’s disease.
New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.
Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana’s active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.
If only it didn't make you fat.

Only to get drunk

FRANKFORT, Ky. State officials in the land of Old Grand-Dad, Jim Beam and Wild Turkey are pushing to ban a device that vaporizes liquor and allows people to inhale the intoxicating fumes for a quick high without the burn of hard liquor.
Teresa Barton, head of the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy, said banning alcohol vaporizers is a matter of public safety, not preserving the state’s sipping whiskey industry. She said such devices could become “a real deadly trap” because they have “no purpose other than to get you drunk.” (uh, that's the point).
So far, 17 states have banned them, including California, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and several others are considering doing so, said Sherry Green, executive director of the National Alliance for Model State Drug Laws. Tennessee, the home of Jack Daniels, already prohibits the vaporizers.
“When you inhale alcohol right into the lung tissue, that gets drawn right into the blood supply immediately, so it’s a very rapid onset of the intoxicating effect, and so has obviously very high abuse potential,” said Robert Walker, an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. (I'm sure that's why it was invented.)
Walker said alcohol vaporizers bypass altogether the tactile pleasures of drinking wine with a fine meal or a cold beer with a pizza: “You’re going strictly to the intoxicating effect of alcohol.”
(again, that's the point)
In addition, Green warned that the devices could provide a dangerous legal loophole for teenagers in states where current law forbids only “underage drinking,” not “underage inhaling.”
I can't remember the last time I drank not to get drunk. I don't think I've ever done that.

I don't drink to get drunk. I remember the last time I did drink to get drunk (probably about a year and a half ago, before that on a semi-regular basis) and now I pretty much try to avoid getting drunk (though a light buzz is okay) and I drink primarily for social reasons.
Am I officially a grown up now?

...and Speaking of Movies...
Have any of you sophisticates living in TCOTU seen "Shortbus"? It was directed by the guy from "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," and allegedly features not only a real plot but lots of explicit yet non-porny sex. From the review (
http://movies2.nytimes.com/2006/10/0...tml?ref=movies) it looked like just the sort of thing that would appeal to the FB crowd. If so, is it worth seeing? Not being in TCOTU, I will probably be forced to check it out on NetFlix.
Also, has anyone here actually seen "Idiocracy"? As good as advertised? It was showing at one theatre around here for about 5 minutes and then vanished in a puff of smoke before I could go see it.

Now.....do I still get to rate ppnyc? Perhaps I can lull her by restating that hair* factors into my assesment of whether someone is attractive.
*For example, lots of lush hair on head = good. Lots of lush hair on precious = bad.

May I just say that I am pleased as punch that "precious" has entered the board vernacular.
Pleased. As punch. You all have made my day.

Although I generally glady support any effort to show Ironweak for the malicious-destroyer-of-all-that-is-good-and-worthy that he is, even he cannot bear any blame for the timely demise of what you generously describe as your "lackluster attempt at wit."
I got your back on this one, Ironweak. You can buy me a beer next time I am in whatever God-forsaken part of the world you call home.

2. a few years ago I stopped the negative posts, and went 100% positive. When absolutely necessary I give limited construtive criticism. It was tough at first, but I can say that I enjoy the board much more after having withdrawn from the mud.
give it a shot- what's to lose?

I enjoy a good beer for the taste, and I also love the taste of a freezing cold glass of Chopin. But more important than the taste of either is what they do to me.
We slow down a little as we age, but its a sneaky slowdown. Your tolerance gets high with experience. I'd have had a nice face on after two double vodkas on the rocks when I was a kid. Now, its a perfect pleasant little buzz for dealing with the arseholes one encounters in commerce-based socializations, or short notice Wednesday night get togethers with a buddy passing through town.
That said, every weekend remains hazy. More low key than not, but hazy. The idea of being stone sober for more than five days in a row is harrowing. This life isn't acceptable enough for that.

To increase or decrease them?
Do her ears hang low? Can she tie them in a bow?
