Somebody on the old boards is reporting at least 7 associate layoffs at Preston; did not specify Portland or Seattle.

Anybody care to comment? Or maybe mock our fallen brothers and sisters? Something?

What the hell do you have against the estate tax? Anyone paying estate tax (family farms mostly excepted in this overly blanketed statement) can well afford it, or didn't plan properly. What are you...a Kennedy?

So we finally get a conversation going on this board, and it's about... politics?!? Curse you, Penske.

Anybody have anything NW-specific to say? Firm gossip? Beer? Wine? Copper River salmon?

Do the transactional types out there have enough to do? At least in Portland, litigation seems plenty busy (despite the fact that our courts are now closed on Fridays).

I had some excellent Copper River Salmon, grilled, on Saturday. We paired it with one of Oregon's finest, a 2001 Sineann Cabernet Sauvignon-McDuffee Vinyard. 8 thumbs up!! (and that doesn't count the dogs, who don't have opposable thumbs to stick up)

Speaking of NW wines I have had recently that I would recommend: on Friday I had a Cavatappi Sangiovese Molly's Cuvee-great with Italian/red sauce food. Very drinkable, i.e. buy a few bottles. On Sunday I had a 2002 Sineann Pinot Gris Oregon. Subtly chilled, at sunset, on the deck overlooking Lake Washington, I almost forgot about the misery of work. And the death tax.

So since you people seem to drink as much wine as I do, I have a question. About a year (or two) ago I had some very nice Canoe Ridge Merlot. I heard they lost their main winemaker and have not had any since. Is it still as good as it was or has it fallen from grace. Also, had a very nice Oregon pinot this weekend called King Estate - reasonably priced in the restaurant so I don't know what it goes for in the stores.

Justices may prod more attorneys to offer free legal help

Some lawyers say they can't spare the time or money to help poor clients for free.

Others would like to help, but know little about housing, domestic violence or other laws most affecting the poor.

Seattle lawyer William Broberg spends much of his time working pro bono cases, some of them in Judge Judith Hightower's courtroom. Such public service may be encouraged by the state Supreme Court.

Then there are lawyers like Bro.

As the Washington Supreme Court considers a proposed rule to encourage more free legal services, William Broberg stands out as a guy who needs no inducement.

Bro, as he is known, could double his income if he wanted to. He could buy art for the bare white walls of his Pioneer Square office.

But, in a profession that prizes deep-pocketed clients and billable hours, this young solo practitioner seems to prefer working for free.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide soon, possibly today, on a rule proposed by the Washington State Bar Association that would spell out for the first time how much public-interest service a lawyer should donate.

While the proposed rule recommends that every lawyer devote at least 30 hours a year to helping poor people otherwise shut out of the justice system, Broberg already has racked up about 100 hours of unpaid service this year.
