FWIW, I finished my re-read the first two over the weekend. I'm about halfway through the third, and maybe I'll actually be able to finish the fifth before its movie comes out. I think it's the one I have the least familiarity with.

I just started with Goblet of Fire, given that the first three books are pretty much just laying the gorundwork, IIRC.

It's clever, although the most recent books (including the Nursery Crime books) might even be a tad too clever for their own good.

There are, as Slave alluded, two separate but related series. The first series is loosely called the Thursday Next books and the other the Nursery Crimes books.
Start with "The Eyre Affair," which is the first of the Thusrday Next books. Some libraries keep them in the mystery section but they aren't mysteries in the traditional sense of the word. They don't really fit in any category.
I love the books even though they remind me of the great number of good books I haven't read.
Unfortunately Fforde isn't going to Chicago on this book tour so you don't have a chance to hear him talk. He was in the Twin Cities last year and it was very interesting. I see he's going to be in San Mateo so I'll have my uncle get his latest signed for me.

prediction: there is some stuff that seemed background noise in books 1 and 2 that will come into play in the last.

Sounds likely. The first 3 books are so short it doesn't make sense to skip them. I expect to be through at least the first two by the end of the weekend -- it's going to be too hot for yard work.

You've convinced me. I was kind of leaning that way as I was reading Goblet of Fire.
I also have one prediction. She didn't introduce two characters as annoying as the Creevy brothers and give them as much prominence throughout the series for no reason.

I thought I found one of these halfway through Prisoner of Azkaban. At Christmas dinner the loopy Professor Trelawney makes a big deal about when 13 people dine together the first to rise will be the first to die. Harry & Ron get up together as the first to leave and she wants to know who got up first. So I thought one of them would die in Book 7.
But then I remembered Dumbledore died in book 6 (actually I'm in denial about that) so he was the first from that table to die and that little scene was just background noise.

The Harry Potter coolness factor
My re-reading the books raised my coolness factor with my Seattle cousin's 8 & 11 year old girls. The 11 y.o. is nearly done with her re-read of HBP. We agree that Snape is going to turn out to be good, not evil. But I don't think my rationale (I really love Allan Rickman the movie Snape) carried much water. She thinks Snape will die saving Harry's life.
I told her I was going to be really upset if the Malvoys don't get some serious smackdown by the end. The 8 y.o. wanted to know what "smackdown" meant and I told her it meant they would get payback for all the terrible things they did. (Not a very Christian attitude, I admit.)

Why are there already Harry-Potter-decorated cakes at the grocery store? Weird.

Why weird? The movie comes out on Wednesday and the book comes out a week and a half later. I can't imagine that I'm the only one carrying around Harry Potter tomes and / or rewatching the DVDs.
Almost done with GoF, will start OoP tonight.
ETA: I'm almost certain that Harry's saving Wormtail from Sirrius and Lupin in PoA is going to be a huge factor in the final book.

I think, so, too--remember what Dumbledore said about the bond/debt created by saving another's life?
I'm about halfway through OoP, having started my re-reading project with PoA last week (we recently finished reading the first two aloud with Magnus, and started PoA with him last night).

Oh, movie. I forgot about the movie. It's early for the book.
