For my 30'th (uh... I mean, uh.. 25th...) birthday, my husband bought me (wait for it), a PLANT. Yup. A plant.

And on another birthday (not a "biggie" ending in a "0"), he got me nothing, but bought HIMSELF a watch.

Obviously, I forgave him -- sort of. I now buy my own presents from him -- and they're a lot more expensive than anything he would have thought of himself. You should see the lovely ring he bought me last year for our anniversary (and not even a "biggie" anniversary!) I tell you, he's a peach!

The wedding is not live so no reason to watch and hope for a jilting. I think it is 3 one-hour pre-taped shows, the first of which was last week. I think it is on opposite either Average Joe or Law & Order so I have good reason to avoid it.

Anyway, Mrs. Not Bob and I caught a couple of flicks in the last week or so. Coincidentally, the former Mister Angelina Jolie was in both of them.

"Bad Santa" is funny. Billy Bob makes an excellent drunken lout. That Lauren Graham chick from "Gilmore Girls" is in it (her character has a Santa fetish). I'd depose her.

Do not bring your children. Notwithstanding the fact that every review I have seen said this multiple times (Billy Bob even said it on "The Best Damn Sports Show), a few morons did so when Mrs. Not Bob and I saw it the other night.

"Love Actually" is also funny. Billy Bob has a small role as a lecherous American president with a bad rug (though Mrs. Not Bob said that he looked pretty good cleaned up). Some of the story lines are better than others -- they could have dropped the porn doubles and the guy who goes to America -- but it was overall a pretty good collection. Not all of them are terribly happy, either, but that's l'amour, right?

The Mister Darcy fan club (hi, dtb!) will be thrilled to see Colin Firth in action, while slave will be disappointed that Keira Whatshername isn't onscreen more often. (Apropos of nothing, she has a wonderfully expressive face, and a delightful smile -- if only she ate a cheeseburger every now and then.)

I've dealt with all these issues. From "we're losing all our good men" to "high yellah thinks he's better than dark-skinned" to "educated nigger ain't no better than me." ALL of it is a product (to a certain extent) of self-hatred and societal values we have internalized. That is understood.

Breaking down someone you don't know because he dates a really, really white woman is stupid, shallow and as offensive as when people force ugly stereotypes on someone because of their skin color. It's not the same as "fixing issues of self-hatred." It's a shallow exercise in lame assumptions.

I agree that she sounded like an idiot because she spoke in absolutes. I was just saying that everyone seemed to miss everything but Tiger hates himself because he's marrying a white woman. I think she made some good points in between all the bullshit.

I too have dealt with all these issues but i don't think it's understood. Based on your comments, I think it's understood by you. A lot of other comments were made and I don't think anyone really recognized the fact that it could be a real issue. This is probably because it was voiced in such a ridiculous way.

The degree of whiteness thing is probably one of the more stupid things I've heard. Just as bad as I'm blacker than you.

I didn't ask why he didn't justify it to me. NM said that she thought he had issues about being black because he only dates white women. I said I didn't think that was evidence of his issues, but his downplaying his being part black at every opportunity was. I don't need justification for that and I didn't ask for it.
