Depends on whether you want to stay for nightfall. My recollection is that one is strongly discouraged from driving the road across the mountains during the night, since it's pretty desolate. But my guess is that the big island revealed gives you the best advice on that, not someone who vaguely remembers tidbits correctly or incorrectly from a few years ago.

If you do travel the roads at night, bring a glowstick (handheld or necklace variety). My experience says that is the local custom.

hotel on ocean near Newport

i will be near Newport Beach this August. I want to on the ocean. So far I found the Newport Beach Hotel. My travel agent tells me my best options are a mile off the water. WTF.

Is there some reason they wouldn't want to book people on the ocean.

Recommendations for other places on the beach? how is the NBH?

Take a weekend trip, photos etc. Ask people at work. Or make stuff up. It makes me seem more an accepted member of the community when people respond. If you do make stuff up stick a pig latin word somewhere in the post as a tipoff to me.

I've only ever stayed at the inland hotels (e.g. the Fairmont (before it was a Fairmont)), but it appears that, in addition to the NBH, there is also the Balboa Bay Club and Resort and a Best Western. I found this information on the internets, so make of it what you will.

Hank. It's because Newport isn't really on the ocean. If you want to be on the ocean, you'll have to stay in one of the quaint resorts on Balboa Island or Corona Del Mar. Newport is like 1 big marina with a couple of nice restaurants on the water. Most of your big hotels are inland. Stay at the Marriott, listen to the timeshare pitch and get $100. Then up the road is the biggest Mercedes dealership I've ever seen.

Hank, how many more red flags do you need about this trip?

Why not come to NY, stay in one of the nice hotels and make a little money dispatching cars on the side when the regular guys are taking a smoke break?

Yes. There is a bridge on one side and a ferry on the other.

I would recommend staying at a beach resort in Laguna or Laguna Niguel. They are just south of Newport.
