When the Rodney King video came out, there was another video out in Detroit showing a group of 10 black teens beating shit out of a white woman. A black friend of mine and I were talking about the 2 videos. He saw the King video as far scarier/worse, while I thought the Detroit one was worse.
His reason was based from the victim's perspective- King couldn't call the cops, the lady could.
My reason was societal. I thought that only bad would come from the Detroit video (a city largely abandoned by whites would get more abandoned) while the King video would generate mostly good. I argued that the cops in LA were obviously way off the reservation and would have to change all that.
I guess he won the argument.
best way off Jury duty I've seen is to just keep saying "huh" at voir dire.
"Juror 10- do you know anyone who was a victim of this type crime"
"huh"
"Juror 10- do you have a hearing problem that will prevent you hearing testimony"
"what"
"Juror 10 -you are excused"
"thanks. bye"

Thank you, Hank. I should have known I could count on you to teach us all the best time to say, "huh?!"
This was your most useful post ever.

Speaking of races, is there a single pair of people on TAR that is remotely worth rooting for to win? I was really hoping that last night's race would introduce a new twist: the double elimination, where the last two couples to arrive would be eliminated. As it was, at least Jonathan, and his equally detestable wife are gone, so they can yell at each other in the comfort of their own homes. Does anyone have the feeling the winner will be determined by the couple not stupid enough to get on the plane to San Jose, Costa Rica, but the correct one to San Jose, California?

Dont get me started on last night. I really thought Hayden "come on baby" the chinless wonder and her balding boyfriend were toast. I dont think I have ever rooted so hard for someone to get booted on any reality show ever, except Tina Do-Ri-tos and that didnt work out well for me.
I am all about Lori and Bolo. Lori has the sexiest southern accfent and I love how she is so My Tits Are Fake and Sometimes They Hurt But Its Part of the Job. Bolo just has a cool name and seems likable enough for someone who is wider than he is tall. They arent too bright but they never claimed to be. That beats aspiring actresses and models. At least str8 wont be spotting them in three months at the La Brea Tar Pits.

Here is a review of the espn series debut by an espn columnist.

I think this is a fairly accurate review. I watched it, and while it's certainly not great, it has the potential to be one of those guilty pleasures that keep you from getting rid of tv altogether.

I was hoping Johnathan and his wife would win. I despise them so much that it just won't be the same without them. And I am now convinced that the two deserve each other and am not so sure about the physical abuse.
Let's think about this. Johnathan can't carry anything, whines like a little bitch and does what he's told when she really gets mad. He always picks the easiest things to do, if anything takes physical effort, she has to do it and he takes responsibility for nothing. I don't think he's capable of knocking her around and I now believe that the editors cut out all the times when her annoying, grating, shrill voice pierced everyone's ears within a 3 mile radius of her and made it seem like he was completely controlling her.
She is an overly-dramatic, whiny, super emotional pain in the ass. She screamed like her leg had been amputated when she cut her finger. Jesus Christ.
I guess the only team left to hate is the team with Kendra on it, who found that 3rd world countries might actually be good for something...or at least provide you with some dirty, over-breeding, ghetto inhabitants to carry your bags for the rest of the day when you can't breathe for 26 seconds. I hope the race ends in Compton.
And whatever happened to her boyfriend (who is the clumsiest person in the show's history) breaking someone in half? Is he still trying to get to the bottom of it?
I forgot about those two idiots in the relationship that isn't working. He is beyond pathetic. Anyone who asks for his mommy before doing anything with the smallest bit of risk probably isn't worth dating. And she acts like he's this tremendous pain in the ass, but she manipulates him like a pro. When he yelled at her for giving out information to another team (which was pretty fucking stupid at this point in the game), she reigned him back in with the quickness with all the crying, and the "I can't do this anymore," etc. Next week, she'll be back to barking orders and he'll be back to taking it and moaning. She likes him the way she is. She's kidding herself if she thinks she wants out.

That remeinds me, what kind of accent is Victoria sporting? Madonna British? Long Island? Jersey? I dont think I heard her say two words all show and then this incredibly nasal barrage comes out of her mouth. Oh, and nice nose job. She probalby looked like Tina Fey when she was sixteen.

The thing that got me was how she would speak to the foreign cab drivers and travel agents with this odd unnatural accent. I hate it when native English speakers speak English to foreigners with a made up foreign accent. Dumbass.
I hadn't checked their website recently, nothing really interesting except this from last month (I assume it was referring to the episode when he left his bag and screamed at her for picking it up):
December 16, 2004
London 2:20am
All of us have our faults. Unfortunately for me millions of viewers are getting to see mine each week. I do not abuse Victoria,
what you see is a heightened version of stress and obsession mixed with medication for a sickness called Sarcoidosis. What was started as a Publicity Stunt turned in to an obsession to race and be first at any cost. This is a GAME and I set out to be the Villain to others, not to Victoria. Victoria and I are working on our relationship to better our selves and learn from our mistakes. I am taking full responsibly for my actions on screen. Please allow me to make the effort.
I am deeply saddened by the storyline that CBS went with, they had so much other footage they could use. I am sorry for my actions, I am sorry to Victoria. Most all I am sorry to the Fans of the Amazing Race.

hockey news (for the one or two fans out there)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...kn_nhl_lockout
They met today in an airport lounge. Frankly, I think the season is toast. And I got my fix over Christmas watching some of those junior games. If I could have it my way, it would be all international hockey, all the time. Those were some good games (the few I managed to watch).

that hardly distinguishes her from anyone. "baby" is the new "amazing". Any tAR drinking game would start with a rule of shots for each time a player says "baby". Slave's bottle of Johnnie Black would be drained by the first commercial break.
As for Bolo, agreed--the only half-likeable couple because they don't take themselves seriously. "My implants are frozen" has to go in the all-time reality show quotes book.

There was but they were eliminated a few shows ago. I liked Gus & Hera, the father-daughter team. I laughed when he kept drinking the beer at the pub and cried when he broke down at the slave gate. Even though it is something I couldn't even begin to relate to, his emotions gave me a little window into what he must have felt there. And Hera was just cool.
Now I guess I'll cheer for Kris and Jon because they don't show them fighting and she seems like a trooper.

My husband's french is not so hot, and a couple of times I caught him speaking english with a french accent (a la pepe le pew) when we went to France & Quebec. I laughed and laughed at him (Oh, how I laughed).
Maybe I should not have laughed so much.
Food for thought.

The officers had claimed in their lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court that because they were white, they were punished more harshly than a black officer who struck the suspect with a flashlight but was not videotaped.
Morse and Darvish accused the city of racial discrimination.
"They feel vindicated," said the officers' attorney, Gregory Smith. "They've never talked about their side of the story and they've been subjected to a lot of abuse. Finally, their story came out."'

A few questions.
1. Has anyone else seen this video? I saw it this morning and this cop (who is huge) had a 16 year old boy with both hands handcuffed behind his back when he smashed his face onto the car and then punched him in the face. I don't know how an "internal police investigation deemed that the amount of force used in the arrest was reasonable," considering the kid was in absolutely no position to be a threat to anyone when the abuse took place.
2. These two feel they were treated more harshly because the other dumb ass cop who hit the kid with a flashlight off camera was black? Was it explained to them that there was clear, undeniable, visual evidence of their abuse? And maybe that was the reason why they got a harsher punishment? Their argument seems to only make sense if he, too, was caught on tape and received a lesser sentence.
3. The difference between one of the plaintiffs losing his job and not being reassigned and the black cop losing his job as a police officer, while apparently being reassigned as a prison guard amounts to millions of dollars worth of damages? The second plaintiff got six more days of suspension than the black cop (who was not caught on camera) and he received $800,000. This is evidence of reverse discrimination? Are you fucking kidding me? $120,000 a day? Someone explain this.
4. These fucking guys should be hiding their faces. Instead, they have just been given the message that they did no wrong and were treated poorly because they're white. Can someone tell me how much the 16 year old kid got? I wonder what kind of lesson cops will take from all of this.
TM
PS - http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/01/18/sh....ap/index.html (And they ask me why I'm jaded.)

I suspect the answer to this specific case will depend on the racial makeup of the jury. Right now, every single reporter is being a pussy and not reporting on the racial comp. Both of those officers have been on a rampage together for quite a while and have a ton of fed and state cases against them and a recent civil one that settled out of court after an all-white jury was picked and seated.

1. People are stupid.
2. It was the same jury that gave damages to would-be school vandals/burglars who fell through a sky-light trying to break in?
3. People are stupid.
4. The jury was full of bigoted stupid people?
5. People are really stooopid.
Maybe this will get reversed on appeal.

True. The show has become Survival of the Jerks. Although who knows whether any of the early-eliminated couples wouldn't have become asses too, if they'd stuck around. Gus might have sat on either Jonathan or Adam if given a chance.
