Poll Question

I was discussing something with a friend today* and was told that this friend and em's spouse annually take week long separate vacations. They also take vacations together. Both are high-powered lawyers in a relatively large urban center.

I was surprised by this. My surprise caused my friend surprise. Hence, we thought that we'd submit this to the arbiters of all that is normal.

This is a 3 part poll.

1. Do you and your spouse take separate vacations? If yes, for weekends or longer?
2. Do you have kid(s)? If yes, do(es) the kid(s) go on the separate vacations?
3. Does your spouse work outside of the home?
1. Back pre-kids, we were doing enough separate fairly exotic and fun business travel so that it never occurred to us to also take separate vacations - in fact, for really good places, we'd find a way to drag the other along. But, that travel did provide some nice and sometimes-needed breaks from each other. Post-kids, no, aside from a some regular long weekends my wife spends with a big group of old friends at a cabin up north. I suppose my business travel might still count as separate vacations for me now.

2. Yes, kids. We've never done a kidless vacation since they started arriving, and we tend to do at least a couple trips per year.

3. Used to, but not anymore. Once the number of kids started building, it was just . . . better . . . not to.

1. Yes, from time to time. I travel semi-regularly for some charity/volunteer stuff I participate in. In addition, I visit my parents without him in the summer. He's been known to visit his parents without me from time to time. We have both done the boys/girls weekend away thing.

2. Yes, one. She goes if I'm going to visit my parents. She stays home if its a charity/volunteer thing or if its a girls weekend. She never goes with him.

3. Yep.

no no. you mean all he has to do is post one of these or perhaps one of these for a more perverse comment.

The last contestant, Latoya, made me wish I had taped the show so I could listen to her again. I'll have to tape tomorrow. She was impressive from the first notes. It is much more difficult to sing softly but with intensity than to sing loudly and she nailed it. I even called in to vote for her. She is my favorite from the first 3 weeks.

The big Hawaiian guy gave the only sucky performance and I thought the judges were kind to him. The other two guys and the North Carolina girl gave so-so performances. They sounded nice but nothing special. My guess is that the second person to advance will be either Amy (pink hair; Simon thought she sounded like a cabaret singer), Elizabeth (the first one; good stage presence) or Leah (the 17 yr old whose parents were Romanian pop stars). Leah had some pitch problems but the judges liked her and Simon said she had potential.
I thought the only good perfs were the last two. I hate Amy Adams. As I reall, she has vibrato, and , new rule, nobody that pale, pasty and flabby should wear a black tank top. and pink hair doesnt make you a good persoanlity. I loved Charly and Jonah and know they have potential dsspite their unimpressive performances. they are just charmers in their own way. too bad they sucked and maybe they can get wild cards though we already have a ruben which hurts the fattie's chance.

I think it's interesting that you have a soft spot for the fattie men but are so dismissive of the fattie women -- I think maybe you are really Simon Cowell! No way you can honestly say that Jonah is a better singer than Amy -- he was shockingly awful last night.

I liked Amy's voice and I thought Leah sounded awful -- she had major breathing problems and was off-pitch a lot. I think it's obvious that the judges want either a minority female or a teenage female to win this Idol b/c that's the only demographic they don't have yet (they have twentysomething white Kelly, minority male Ruben, and white bread male Clay). Almost everyone they've pimped so far has been a female who is either a minority or a teenager (or both). I think they would LOVE to have a minority teenage female win (they desperately want to tap into the Hillary Duff/Lindsay Loehman teenage girl fan base)so I expect them to pimp Jasmine next week (16 year old Hawaiian girl).
