I really don't think Oprah experiences racism anymore, ever. I don't think the clerk would have said that to her face, but last time I was in France, I, my white friend and a dark-skinned N. African who was staying in our hotel were turned away from some club. When my white friend went back to find out if he could jedi-mind-trick his way in, he was told that he and I could come in, but the N. African could not. I was not mistaken for a N. African, though and it wasn't Club Hermes that turned us away.

My friend told me last night that this guy that she went on a date with (he's 24) was shocked when she told him her age (30) and now she thinks he's no longer interested - notwithstanding that I was there when they met and they seemed to really like each other and she said that the date went really well until he found out her age. I've never found a guy to be spooked by an older woman, especially before any sex was had, so I was a little surprised. Six years does not seem like too much.

The best question for Cruise is the one that the Boston Phoenix reporter asked him at a War of the Worlds event -- something to the effect of, since Scientology is based upon getting rid of the after effects of evil aliens, did the plot of WotW resonate with him? Tom did not handle the question very well.

Right, but as SS pointed out, it's a different market. A Dr. Phil or Suze Orman book costs $20, and watching their shows costs nothing. Plus, people who watch Oprah believe they need to improve themselves and turn to her for tools to do so, so these people are seen as helpers. While she may influence purchasing, I don't think she could influence luxury purchasing via her audience to a degree so great that Hermes should be concerned. That said, she's got a lot of celebrity friends, as she so readily reminds everyone in her promos "MY friend Julia Roberts will be on the show Tuesday! Pictures from my friend John Travolta's birthday party on Wednesday!" So, if Hermes were to lose cachet among celebrities as a result of this, then they might have a problem. But if I were in Hermes PR, and if I were absolutely certain the facts would bear out no reasonable cry of racism, I would consider working other celebrities to counteract any Oprah effect, rather than kissing her continually fluctuating in size butt.
