Ugh, you nailed it. I am happy that my firm is relatively free of these types, the single example unfortunately being the head of my group.

I'd instead been subject to very dour partners who either have no personality or are clinically depressed. They tend to work a nagging thing on me, chiding me for joking or digging into me for not paying attention to things. I always paid attention and got results. One guy told me "It's over, lets get to work," when I was talking about 9/11... just a month after the attack. He barely left his office to watch the 9/11 coverage with everyone else when the damn thing was happening. He knew nothing of sports, music, movies, etc... His whole life was just talking on that headset and handing in timesheets. He'd ask me about cases and when I couldn't rattle off obscure case facts for him, he'd gently, but in a scolding tone, ask me why. He's also get mad that I never asked for help. I think he was offended that I wasn't interested in it.
Is there a name for those types? And is there some unwritten rule among some lawyers that having a personality is bad because it indicates a lack of enthusiasm for the work that ought to be taking up all of your mind?

at my big firm there was a guy who worked 7 days a week, and lots of hours every day. he was in a different area so I didn't have to talk to him.
but there is a positive to those guys- he had a window I could get to from outside (1st floor). anyway, twice on a sunday i had to grab something, but had forgot my office key. I got in because I could knock on his window- basically anytime, any day.

Of course, that's Boras talking.

Not only is it Boras doing the talking, but it's Boras quoting what he's heard. Your source is unflappable.

Maybe. My original point was, why make your first step into a new market a $90 million gamble? This guy isn't Matsui. Matsui is as big in Japan as Jordan was in his prime here. And he was playing on the biggest team in Japan. He has real marketing muscle. And even including all that, we only paid him 6, 7 and 8 million dollars his first three years and we didn't pay for the right to negotiate with him, as I believe he wanted to play for the Yankees and basically contacted us.
So, maybe there is this huge upside that Boston has uncovered that doesn't apply to the Yankees since we already have a presence there. Maybe they actually want to have a presence in Asia to grab other players who want to play for Boston (like so many players want to play for the Yankees). Henry isn't a stupid man (most would say), known for throwing money around. But I'm skeptical. I think finishing 3rd last season after still having that World Series aftertaste made him want to win something. To be a player. And if it meant securing a deal with an unknown commodity for essentially $30 million a year to beat the Yankees and become relevant again, he would.
But if he's just blocking the Yankees from getting him and doesn't make a huge acquisition and fill some other holes this off season* to improve, Boston fans will burn his house to the ground.
All that said, if this guy is the next great pitcher and you sign him, you'll have a ridiculous rotation, very young, supported by other young prospects. And we all know pitching wins championships. Huge risk, but it could pay off for years to come. And I can appreciate that.
TM
*And signing another big name pitcher or spending a bunch of money to plug the other holes you guys have will make it seem like the Sox never intended to sign this guy.

I'm surprised at how positive Boston's treating this. Front page of the Globe today, top placement and running through the fold, with a prominent sports editorial on the front of the sports page saying this shows Henry's looking to win in the short term (and a buried piece doing the analysis on why this just may be a crazy sum of money to spend at this point in time).
He's got to do major surgery on the pitching staff to win, and that is a tall order. The spread between what you'd pay for a top 2 to 3 starter on the US market and what they're paying is the amount he's blowing for marketing reasons - and that spread may be less than we're all thinking. Who else is on the market for a team that may need at least two top-notch starters?
I'm still trying to figure this one out, though. But I think you're overestimating the current state of Boston pitching.

That sounds delicious. I think I'm adding brussels sprouts to my Thanksgiving. another suggestion to add to that mix (of sprouts and garlic, sauteed): sliced mushrooms and leeks cut to about 1-1.5-inch lengths. The combination is phenomenal. If my mother could stand mushrooms and the dish were pretty, I'd add it for T-Day, but oh, well.

I bet they pay less for each book than your independent bookstore.
And either way, they're in a different market, much like the hot dog vendor in Times Square who can charge $2.50 for the same hot dog that a vendor on 14th street has to charge $1.00 for.

On 9/11 my train was last into Penn. Then, they shut that shit down. police screaming "Get out. Now!!" so I walked up and some wonderful angel guy walked me to my office. [total schlepp at the time, like 20 blocks and a few cross streets over]
So I arrive at work breathless....everyone is gathered around the radios/small tv sets/conference room tvs etc.
There is a deposition going on with the the partner I at the time worked for [another firm] and the court reporter was freaking out since, she was from Staten Island and 3/4 of her family were like cops and firefighters and they wouldn't let her go.
Then, as icing on the cake, the senior partner's secty rushes in breathless also out of Penn, she ran from Penn as well, and the partner I worked for at the time snaps at her "The client is in there did you ORDER BREAKFAST???!!!!"
We looked at him, like You.Are.A.Diiiiiiick. Totally not caring that like 1200 people were lying dead 1/2 mile away. smoke pouring from downtown. One of the secretaries married that partner. And I never forgot that day and in my petty little way since i hated her guts I was glad that she was married to someone that made my blood run cold on 9/11.

He also had really bad hair plugs.
Not a lawyer, btw.

I had a boss like that. He was a lawyer.

This is bullshit. It is no more difficult dealing with a family or friend's health problems here than anywhere else.

I hated them as a kid, but that's b/c my mom didn't cook them the way Hank has suggested. The wife cooks them that way. A world of difference.
