I wasn't aware that Portugal even remained a viable state. Go figure.

He's running, he's kicking the ball, ohhh, it was stolen... somebody else is kicking it. The score is off the charts, folks. 1 to zip!

Wake me when somebody gets a concussion. I'll catch it on the jumbotron.*

* I will give it this - its better than regualr season baseball, which I have not viewed since the year the Pirates were beaten by Atlanta in the NL playoffs in 92... or was that 93?

By the way, PP, if you can hear me in there, I think your posts are the expression of a brilliant and subtle piece of site-specific internet performance art the likes of which I have never seen, and I commend you. Or else it's what MR said, but I'm not a cynic like that.

One thing I will never understand is why people - well, Americans, anyway - equate the level of excitement of a sport with how often points are scored. Does this mean that basketball is many many times more exciting than all other sports? Is arena football many times more exciting than regular football. Why is not soccer far more exciting than football and baseball because there is constant action instead of the stop-start-stop-start that occurs all throughout the game.

Not that the reverse situation is not also true. Europeans get bored when NFL games are played in Europe because they are used to seeing highlight reels.

I guess my main point is that Sebastian is a boorish American slob who is too much of a pussy to drink real Scotch.

I've loved Hitchens from the first time I read him, even though I've always adored Mother Teresa, and worked with her Missionaries of Charity while I was in college. Does anyone have any idea whether the comment is true in his piece about Michael Moore making a statement that if those people on the hijacked airplanes had been black, the outcome would have been different? Do you think a diet company will pick up Michael Moore and try to turn him into the next Anna Nicole/Monia Lewinsky/Fergie spokesperson?
Let me start by saying that I like Hitchens because he writes a lot and says nothing (the Moore piece was an aberration - it was actually pretty direct and economical). And I hate Mother Theresa for obvious reasons, totally unrelated to her prose. But I don't understand your position, which seems to imply that one cannot like both Hitchens and Mother Theresa at the same time. I see no diamterically opposed positions in their mission statements or c.v.s Why can't you like both?

I can only speak to hockey, but I will say that frequently the higher scoring games are the more exciting for the reason that (in hockey at least) those games are more action-packed. More goals are scored in a 4 on 4 situation than 5 on 5 because there is constant action. So I would say that it's not the number of goals, its the action that determines the excitement. And the consequence of an action-packed game is a higher score.

This may only be true of hockey. It is not true of basketball, where a high score is somewhat a function of the fact that there is no goaltender, and not the amount of action in a game.

I don't watch soccer much, but I think the problem is not the low scores, but the fact that the games are decided by penalty kicks.

This reeks of sexual metaphor.
