Euro 2004 Update (actually an update)

They've tried it several ways - PKs if tied at end of regulation, sudden death (the "golden goal" - first goal in overtime period wins, if still tied after end of of OT then PKs), modified sudden death (the "silver goal" - team leading after completion of first overtime period wins, if still tied play second overtime period, if still tied PKs). Everybody moans about all of these options for various reasons. Sudden death sounds good but watching the 120th minute of a draw can be dire, esp when you know you're just going to be getting PKs at the end of it. The Euros are being played on silver goal rules this year but no doubt UEFA will change it yet again.

I mean straight sudden death, perhaps with a break every 45 minutes, but with no PKs thereafter. If you know you have to score to win, no pulling into a shell to get to PKs.

I really like the new Hanes premium t-shirts. You know, the ones with the care info screened on the back of the neck, eliminating the tag? Much more comfortable.

I think that would be great, but it could result is never-ending games. With OT and then PK's, you at least know that the game is going to end. Form a TV marketing perspective (and that is what drives the game at the pro level) it would be a non-starter.

You could also tell them "TAKE IT TO THE SPORTS BOARD ENOUGH ALREADY" but that would be like Owen Meany in all caps. and I think that was from the old board also.

There's a sports board? You should buy your husband some of those t-shirts. No irritating, scratchy tag to bother him when he's watching silver goal overtime penalty kicks.

They can't run another 45 minutes after playing 90. Just playing two 15-minute overtime periods (which is what they've been doing, e.g. England v. Portugal) wears the players out and makes it less likely that anyone will score (as noted by AdL).
And I've got a pointy brick for anyone who thinks I'm taking this discussion to another board after wading through the crap that was posted today by some who shall remain nameless.*
*Yes, you.
